Bees don't have any protection around the edges of their wings so they can get damaged with use.
This bee had badly damaged wings but amazingly could still fly OK with his smaller wings.

That image was taken from no more than ten centimeters away from the dragonfly, and it has been then cropped: in the original shot, part of the wings and the tip of the abdomen were outside the frame, so I cropped it to keep just the central section you see here...
A beautiful and surpraising image: it is impressive how these creatures manage to keep flying with such battered wings. I believe Byan posted a photo of a dragonfly capable of flying with only three wings...
Really, really small!
At first glance, it looked like some kind of carnivorous plant. Around here, we call them “dragon mouths” and for me it is impossible to walk past one without making it open its mouth 😀
