I remember the first Dragonfly I saw back when I first had my little FZ300 was one of these Graphic Flutterers. It was also the first half decent in flight shot I managed after many attempts (I just went back and dug it out - it's not much). But the passion was born.
The Graphic Flutterers are mostly around fields while I am generally looking for those around water now.
So I was surprised this week to see a couple of them again...

I normally take a few perched shots if I think they may turn out ok, but I don't keep many. I never saw the various muted colours of this one in the vf so was kinda surprised by it.

Nice shots, it must be difficult to follow the protagonists in flight with the equivalent of an 800mm...

One of the disadvantages of my camera in macro mode is that if I want a good magnification, I have to shoot with very wide-angle zoom positions that force me to get very close to the subjects, which usually escape. One of the advantages is that, when they don't flee, you have the pleasure and excitement of shooting a few centimeters away from specimens like this...

That is quite close working distance. You must be good at sneaking up on them. Does your camera take filters?

I'm practically turning into a ninja 😄, although it is true that many times I would prefer a little more working distance 😬

The composition has a touch of mysterious and the fade from monotone to color background is fabulous.

There are some reads about 2 feet high just off the bank that some of the dragonflies like perching on. I have been trying to lie down on my belly to get lower than them for a looking up shot. But not much success yet...

It is pretty much impossible when they are zooming around so I am always waiting for them to hover a bit. Even then there isn't a very good keeper rate because they still move about while hovering. Some days are better than others and it is just good luck that my favourite and the most photogenic, the Australian Emerald, hovers a lot.

Yesterday I took some video clips. Reviewing them I was thinking oh my god my hands are terribly shaky but the background was fine - I hadn't realised how much they move about - dprevived.com/t/video-editing/7690/

That's quite powerful - filling the frame. I like how the focus plane curves around the fold.

Spectacular image. Love the colors and composition. It demands attention. Do you know which lens was used?

Thanks a lot! Yes, I always mention the lens used in my descriptions on flickr. I‘ve shot this one with a Kuribayashi A.C. Petri Orikkor 4.5 cm f/1.9 (reversed). Not a dedicated macro lens but I always enjoy experiments like that.
