The bottom half looks like a typical magpie or crow's nest. Both birds build in exposed places with little fear of predators. But the top half (made of strips of Melaleuca bark) looks like it might have been added by a possum. I've yet to see any occupants.

It looks large. Maybe you could sleep in it? 😊

It made its final resting place! Well likely not Dicky! Perhaps the occupants migrated north to escape your winter. Likely not that either. I did not know possums made nests in trees. I wonder if ours do. Possums in Ontario are relatively recent having come north attached to the undercarriages of trucks.

In the northern hemisphere squirrels make nests in trees that are sometimes similar to that one.

A nest connoisseur!! … I'm impressed … locally, large tree nests are usually squirrels .. but occasionally a hawk will build one close … possums are around but rarely seen and I always thought they lived near the armadillos but then I was never very curious about possums or armadillos as long as they stay out of the garden …. So will you sit on the nest and show us whatever comes along to claim it? …. Currently I'm sitting, unprofitably, on a wrens apartment as they haven't paid the rent yet …

Well, I think the pigeons have learnt to build a new type of nest which is impervious to your threats, Dicky. Just remember to wear a wide brimmed hat when beneath that tree. 🤠 lolol. And consider yourself lucky that these can't fly. Rich
