Over the last three months, I've carefully converted to the Arca mounts for all my tripods, replacing the heads etc. I've then gone and bought grips for all my cameras with arca bases so I can just slide them in and no issues.

Last week, I took all the arca bases off my camera to do some weight measurements (you can see where this is going, can't you).

Today, I loaded my cameras and a tripod into the car and have shot off for two weeks holiday in Scotland. Guess what I didn't bring!!!!

    Bugger.

How many tripods and cameras do you have?

I've got 4 tripods, 2 monopods and 3 cameras all set up for Arca. Plus an old Canon 300 with an arca plate on the bottom.

I done things than that. like forgettting to put memory cards in my cameras and arriving at an event shoot 🫣 had to borrow a card off one of the other shooters. even my back up camera left the card at home 🀨

There's a long story behind that. The short version is that I had a couple and wanted something light. So I mixed & matched. Then MPB were selling a manfrotto one for 'spares & repairs'. It was complete apart from the head. Then, we were clearing out the club's store room and there was a tripod in there - a very nice one. I asked if anyone wanted it, no one did, so I took it home.

Anyway, I now have some very nice lightweight (around 1Kg) tripods.

    She is with me.

No staying in Galloway (SW of Scotland. We have a cow shed to live in for two weeks (look up Coo Palace on t'internet).

You will have to go easy on the drams, and hope for sunny weather, so you can shoot hand-held at short exposures and guarantee blur-free photos. Good exercise! 😎😁😟

Have a good time with lots of fun and rest!

Stupid question from a stupid old man ...

If you take the head off your tripod, does that leave you with a handy-dandy 1/4"-20 UNC stud upon which you can mount a camera directly?

  • June 27, 2025, 5:58 p.m.

No, It leaves a larger thread. Plus, it's not adjustable (and I'm not messing around with the legs to make it work). But thank you for the idea.

I ordered an Arca plate from Amazon - it turned up today.

    A pity, that.

    Good job!

The smaller screw is 1/4 inch. The larger one is 3/8.

Both, standard sizes for tripod assemblies and camera base plates. There are adapters (small, cost next to nothing) readily available between these sizes and their male and female inclinations.

Handy to have in your bag of tricks, even though you don't plan to mount a camera directly on the legs (now). Frustrating how the "wrong" size will pop up in a situation when least expected.
