Welcome all to the Sunday Cat!, a weekly gathering of image makers on a subject of mutual interest, our feline friends. The Sunday Cat! has appeared each Sunday, except for a brief interruption in September, 2016, since Anton AK started the thread at DPReview on 23 September 2007. Successive thread managers have been John King, Warriormouse, Robert J, Coldamus, Robert J again (with an assist by StanTsui) and since September 2016, former lurker, me. With the shuttering of DPReview, the last Sunday Cat! was hosted there on 2 April 2023. After taking a leap of faith, the Sunday Cat! landed here at its new home on 9 April 2023.

    Typical Kitty of the Week!

    Coffee

Coffee, a typical kitty pose but an atypical image by @AnnieNg :)

As said by Warriormouse, "Photos can be more than just art, they can be memories, so come share your picture and stories of your feline companions with us."

“Official” posting time is every Sunday at 0000 UTC. Because this is Saturday afternoon for me, posting time may vary to accommodate my schedule. I'll try to post a message if I know I will be very late. Anyone anxious to start the new week is free to do so. But if you do, please PM me so I don’t accidentally double post.

Come one, come all! All cats, all cameras welcome. Images from any time, any place. Let the Sunday Cat! be a refuge where nice comments abound and only constructive criticism is given when it's requested.

The Sunday Cat! is now open for business. :D

    Last week's purrs, #822 / DPRv #15

    Thread Manager's Corner:
Last week was summertime quiet but not one without excellent images. Thanks!

In coming here, you many have noticed this post:
    Forum update document for discussion
I have been expecting something like this for a while now, waiting to see what direction the founders might decide to take before raising the issue here. As you may have noticed, the Sunday Cat! is virtually all the activity in the Olympus SLR talk forum. With this forum going away it's clear that the Sunday Cat! will move when the new structure is put up. The question is, where? The test version of DPRv (as of 22 July 2023) does not have a place where this logically fits. I have kept it under its historical location for continuity, but the changes ahead will mean that the location will have to change. That brings with it the question, should the Sunday Cat! return to DPR as others have? Should it stay here and adapt? I think there is greater visibility here, but not everyone has followed, and some 16 years of history lives only at DPR. I'm not sure how long before the existing forum structure here will be changed, but I have to believe that it will be soon, so please add your thoughts here. Thanks.

I would wait a bit before making a decision.
Simply out of respect for the people who set up such a forum in such a short time.
I like the photo of Mr. P very much.

It looks like the restructure is going to take place in the next week, so some decisions need to be made. I think the easiest thing for the admins would be to keep this under Olympus, but once we lose the original name, I'm not sure if it should stay under the gear name any longer. But I also don't know how much work it would be for them to move the existing 16 threads to a different forum (I need to ask). Currently there isn't a forum that looks suitable, but a rename of the nature and wildlife form to add "pets" might work. I'm a little concerned though because this forum is more about stories and less about photography technique or critique. I think nature and wildlife would be more technically oriented, so this may not fit there either. Any thoughts?

Thank you, and I'll thank him for giving me the opportunity. :D

This kitty looks like life has not been easy, but despite this the gleam in the eye and confident stride shows the passion for life lives on.

Do your images let us read into them what we wish, or do they show us their true selves? I don't know but they always seem to show the inner beauty of these animals.

I think cats can sense very well if you like them.
I guess that's why they let me get so close sometimes.
They come up to me quite often.
Photographing cats on the streets of Istanbul is always a pleasure for me.

That is one no-nonsense cat! He's obviously seen adversity, but pulled through stronger than ever. Not a cat I would want to be on the wrong side of 😼.

Arni and Lexi looking outside from their indoor cat place in the world.
Perhaps they are looking at DP Review and the Sunday Cats former
home. They might feel more comfortable there. That is my idea as well.arni lexi looking outward S.jpg

It looks like they are behind a very secure door which will keep them from making unauthorized trips outside! (Mr. Me has learned too well how to open the screen on a sliding door...)

Yes, feeling comfortable is important. Being a constant in the Olympus SLR talk forum is comforting. Knowing that all the history was in one place was comforting, until it wasn't. I think that ultimately, that is the problem. Not being able to see the future. Does Gear Patrol make a success of DPR or does it drain them financially so that they ditch the forums? Can DPRv find and develop a place for itself where it can thrive and grow now that DPR is saved (for the time being)?

Since we moved here I think we have gained some visitors, but lost others, and of course had to leave 16 years of Sunday Cat! behind. (That perhaps gnaws at me most of all.) But here the Sunday Cat! has a better exposure by virtue of the threads display as well as the top level forum display when it is active. And the preview feature, for me, is wonderful! It helps me to hide fix my mistakes. :) Before, moving Sunday Cat! was a decision that had to be made. Now whether to stay or go does not define the end. At least the possible timeline for change to the forum structure here has slipped to two weeks. More time to think about it and discuss.

I've never commented on this thread before, but feel it's time I must

Please keep Sunday Cat! on this site - it is one of the threads that is guaranteed to get my work day off to a good start - and I'm sure there are many others who follow it silently (guilty pleasures?)

Kumsal - is there a story behind "Street cats of Istanbul"? Are they feral? If so, why are they so approachable? Would love to have a bit of background

It never crossed my mind that people come here just to enjoy the images but not necessarily post or comment. Thanks for making me aware of that, and thanks for making it a habit to visit! That's a nice thing to know. :)
