Welcome all to the Sunday Cat!, a weekly gathering of image makers on a subject of mutual interest, our feline friends. The Sunday Cat! has appeared each Sunday, except for a brief interruption in September, 2016, since Anton AK started the thread at DPReview on 23 September 2007. Successive thread managers have been John King, Warriormouse, Robert J, Coldamus, Robert J again (with an assist by StanTsui) and since September 2016, former lurker, me. With the announced shuttering of DPReview (which did not happen), the last Sunday Cat! there was hosted on 2 April 2023. After taking a leap of faith, the Sunday Cat! landed here at its new home on 9 April 2023.

    Lounging Kitty of the Week!

As said by Warriormouse, "Photos can be more than just art, they can be memories, so come share your picture and stories of your feline companions with us."

“Official” posting time is every Sunday at 0000 UTC. Because this is Saturday afternoon for me, posting time may vary to accommodate my schedule. I'll try to post a message if I know I will be very late. Anyone anxious to start the new week is free to do so. But if you do, please PM me so I don’t accidentally double post.

Come one, come all! All cats, all cameras welcome. Images from any time, any place. Let the Sunday Cat! be a refuge where nice comments abound and only constructive criticism is given when it's requested.

The Sunday Cat! is now open for business. :D

    Last week's purrs, #856 / DPRv #49

    Thread Manager's Corner:
The gas and electric utility PGE decided to bestow light on its customers before the day came to an end (local time) so the Sunday Cat! is now posted! The lengthy power outage also burned down my plans to work on photos today. After getting my computer up to date with maintenance, PGE decided to change my plans. So maybe later. Meantime, Palmer is still with us, and enjoyed some quality time in the sunshine today. :) He hopes that like Wesley, all the kitties get as much sunshine as they want!

Though small in size, the imprint they make on our lives is huge.

I like how your colorful neighbor is keeping a low profile. She probably hoped you wouldn't see her there. Fooled her alright! :)

I have to admit I have debated for a long time about going back to the Sunday Cat's origin site at DPR. It might continue to languish in the Olympus forum there. It's been suggested to me that put it into the Micro Four Thirds forum (DPR), as that forum is much more active. While true, I've often found the tone of the forum to be less than appealing, so haven't tried to take it there. I did some cross posts in the MFT forum for a while pointing at the Olympus forum, but couldn't get any cross over visits.

None of the photography topic forums here or there seem suitable, although maybe Home Photography here would work. But since the Sunday Cat! is more about the kitties and their stories, a forum angled towards techniques and critiques just doesn't seem to be the right place for this. Also, while the Sunday Cat! was never exclusively for Olympus users, it was originated by Olympus owners in the Olympus forum and the E series cameras featured quite a bit early on, I've tried to keep that heritage alive (but just barely!). Historically, the Sunday Cat! has not openly solicited images of family members of other species, but it does have a history of dogs, some birds and other visitors making cameo appearances from time to time. We certainly can do that here. :)

Yes, very quiet. I actually got a shot of Palmer today when didn't turn away fast enough! Now all I need is some time to get it to LR and post. :)

Lexi certainly looks like he's in the catbird seat there! ;)

Kitty has turned the corner and now actually jumps up on to our laps for cuddles. Tiger and Stripey maninly ignore her now. She still won't go putside

Tiger gets more dog like every day. He follows us around whilst we are doing the housework or gardening. Here he's watching over me

    But she is persistent!!!!

I am just a tourist here as you know!!! So take my kibitzing for what it is. I thought Andrew was a bit premature moving back to DPR but I was absolutely wrong as the "Weekly ... " has thrived there as many of the participants refused to move or tried this and didn't like it as the conversation is very difficult to follow ... The MicroFourThirds is what the SLR forum was a decade ago when many there thought pictures that didn't relate to the hardware should never be posted .. Several of us moved to the Compact Forum for almost a year until they started complaining there that SLRs were not wanted there. So I think of current SLR as members who want to demonstrate how the equipment is used ....

I tend to think of the main THREAD page here as the forum and never travel to any of the micro forums any more. Looking at that front page is like looking at a slow DPR forum page with last post usually almost a week old ... Only needed to go below to other forums when starting a post and I'm not sure it matters where these are posted ...

It's getting a bit less lonely this week ..... but no crowd .. yet .....

    Hi,

The closest forum I can think of over there is Nature + Wildlife. Well, cats aren't really either, but that's as close as I can see....

All the other forums are going to react as already described. If you ain't using X gear, don't post here! Sad.

The only equipment forum over there I can think of that doesn't follow that pattern is the Medium Format one. We don't care what you're shooting. Film, digital, format size, even large format. And we have plenty of chatter about smaller formats as well. But no one other than the MF crowd would ever find Sunday Cat there.

And the MF using folks don't shoot much by way of pets using MF gear. Including me. I don't tend to grab the MF unit or the full frame unit even though they sit all ready to grab and shoot. I use a cell phone. Sigh.

Here is a shot of the still missing Fred just because I am positing in a Sunday Cat thread. And Snowflake, who is still here.

I think Home Photography would be suitable. There has been the odd pet thread there although it's been quiet lately too...
MFT on dpr certainly has it's share of one-upmanship. It has it's own weekly photo thread though - which tends to drift out to a fortnight or more, is open to all brands / formats and doesn't seem to have too much c&c. Not suggesting to use that thread just that the forum overall might be accommodating.

    You sure? Here goes...

[edit] p.s. I don't currently have a cat but I love them. I love my dog too. But somehow I don't know that dogs go with this forum so if the consensus is the same, I will delete this post...

Going along with cats and dogs here is a photo of Mokey who actually enjoyed
his time with June, the part cattle dog with the unlimited supply of energy which
kept all of us in the household on our toes. She proved a bit much for us and
brought her back to the cattle dog rescue for someone who could handle her.
She was intelligent, energetic, very trainable and got into everything.

Not quite the same but Palmer seems to like to be in the room with me or the nearest comfortable place. I'm not sure if this is new and I didn't realize it before, or if he only started it after he began his downhill slide. For Palmer it might be a sense of security. For Tiger though I wonder. Is it just to be sure he knows what you are up to? Maybe he wants to be the first to know if the furniture has been moved, or if something has changed in HIS environment. We are after all only their servants. ;)

They certainly can be, especially if there is an attraction. I think I may have finally discouraged the neighbors' cats who were nightly visitors for a while, by taking up the water dish that I put out in the morning with fresh water for Palmer if he goes outside. I was leaving it out all night and they would use it.

I was sorry to see Andrew's thread go back because it is very lively and had crossover with the Sunday Cat! that was helpful. I agree that threads on this website are more difficult to navigate, but I really like the ability to edit my posts by using the preview feature, so I can be confident that I've made the edits the way I intended. I'll also admit to liking the image details you get at DPR better. You only get some exif details here, but then this thread at least is more about the cats and their stories and not so much the gear. Image display is better integrated into the DPR website, but I have learned to work with the display method here and don't have a problem that it is different. The main thing for me is that ever since the "end" of DPR last year, I stopped spending much of my time in any photo forum. The Sunday Cat! is the only one I attend regularly, and it seems that I can only come up for air and post just a little before the next edition should be raised!

My bookmark is setup to take me right to this forum, but initially I was going to the all threads page too where you can see across all forums for the latest activity. I think that is another benefit of this site because it exposes activity across them all and makes the Sunday Cat! visible in a way that it can't be at DPR. I guess my diminished enthusiasm for photo websites in general is why I pretty much only visit this forum and the Olympus forum at DPR now. Maybe in time I will swing back to being more engaged. :)

Really, when you get down to it, gear forums are about gear, so it makes some sense for the topic gear to be represented in the forum. I think with the Sunday Cat! because in the second week of its existence it already stated that images from any camera would be accepted, it established itself as agnostic and was accepted as such, although... Apparently someone disagreed and moved the Sunday Cat! to "Samples and Galleries." The price paid by DPR was pretty steep and they had to pick up the pieces of the website after it was over. ;)

I agree that MF gear is not very compatible with kitty photos, especially this kind of stuff. :)

It seems that in your household, everyone gets a turn on the bed! Around here Mr. Me owns the bed and Palmer only gets to make guest appearances in the morning if he needs to get my attention. With such a loving home it seems that Fred would have come back if he could. It's always so maddening when they disappear (fortunately mine have all come back eventually) because you just don't know, and there is no way to know unless you can find them.

It's interesting. Your comment about the weekly photo thread made me take a look over there at the DPR MFT forum. That seems to be a new one. What got to me though as I looked around is the dearth of any other image threads. There used to be so many of them. Some jumped from the Olympus forum to the MFT forum to get more activity, but I don't see them there now at all. Even the new weekly one seems to be fairly low activity. Perhaps image threads are a thing of the past and not what people are interested in now? In the Olympus forum there used to a bird thread, a macro thread, a flower thread, a weekly Olympus Challenge thread and I think at one time even a dog thread. All gone now. Maybe it doesn't matter where the thread is, just whether people participate or not.

I've never seen a dog like Ravi before. That ticked fur coat is really is interesting. And a powerful build, which I guess is needed to do the job of herding cattle. Any experience with herding cats? :D

Maybe she's having second thoughts about her voluntary imprisonment. Or maybe this is the prelude to her wandering off to find another home? I didn't realize she had so much white. Quite unlike my bi-colors.

After doing a little reading on the Australian Cattle Dog I can see why she might have been a lot to handle. It sounds like if you adopt one, and apparently even one that isn't a purebred, you're going to need to plan on giving them a lot of engagement, or they'll find ways to entertain themselves without you!
