I'm hoping to be able to take some photos of the Blue Supermoon tonight (30/8) or tomorrow night but unfortunately the weather forecast at least for tonight is not good with overcast skies and maybe some rain.

In the mean time here are a couple of images of previous supermoons to hopefully whet the appetite of anyone interested 🙂

Very nice moon shots - great detail in the second one. Thanks for the reminder - I'm not sure if there will be any opportunity for me to attempt capturing anything of it, but I'm looking forward to your results!

    Thank you simplejoy.

Unfortunately not tonight. It's very overcast here at the moment so hopefully, fingers and toes crossed, the clouds will clear up by tomorrow evening.

I did it yesterday evening, but not lucky. [UT+2]

Humid wind, no way to get a sharp shot.

    2023-08-29 22.54.38_DxO -1.jpg

With a dry wind in July, same gear, I got a better result

    2023-07-28 23.23.59_DxO_DxO .jpg

    I will try again tonight.

    (maybe no wind ? )

With full moon close ups it's always more difficult to get sharp images because the light is hitting the moon 'face on' and so is very flat and harsh.

In your second shot where the light is hitting the moon at an angle to it, shadows are cast creating more contrast and so it is much easier to get sharp images.

Below are some some non full moon photos.

    That's what I thought.

Even during daylight shots, I get them sharp

In daylight it's a little easier because you can use faster shutter speeds, especially if it's windy.

Still no luck tonight with the weather. It's overcast with light on and off drizzle. The weather forecast for tomorrow is better so hopefully will get a chance to take some photos even though it won't quite be a super moon. I have plenty of close-up shots but few of the moon low above the horizon with other elements in the frame, so I'm hoping for better weather tomorrow night.

I got a couple of shots of the full moon last night though the trees. I used mirror lockup and a 2 second time delay on the shutter release. The are cropped because I liked the play of the branches across the face of the moon.
I also spot metered off the moon, so the shutter speed and ISO are pretty low.

Very nice composition Steve and I too like the play of the branches across the face of the moon.

But it's a pity the moon itself is clipped (nearly a solid white disk) on my screen.

Are you sure your metering spot was on the actual moon and not on the branches/leaves because the slow shutter speed is consistent with the darker parts of the scene being metered?

Normally if you spot meter a full moon, which in reality is very, very bright, I would expect a significantly faster shutter speed than 1/25s

    Thank you for sharing 🙂

The weather is slightly overcast, AGAIN 😣, here this morning but the forecast is good so hopefully tonight the clouds will clear enough to allow me to try to get some low on the horizon moon shots. Moonrise is at 7:24pm tonight (still 97.2% full), well after sunset at 5:58pm.

The clouds cleared up late this afternoon 🙂

Even though the supermoon was last night, the moom was only slightly further away from earth this evening and still 97% illuminated.

Below are 3 of the photos I took this evening - two looking at the moon through trees and one "close-up".

    DannoB.,

    Thank you for your comments.

I puzzled over this all day yesterday, and I think I figured it out. It has to do with this Cautionary note in my manual:

    spot metering.jpg

I realized that I was raising my camera slightly to meter off the moon, but what I was actually doing was lifting the front leg of my tripod slightly. After I metered, and relaxed my grip, the tripod was lowering slightly, just enough to drop the center of the frame down into the darkness below the moon;s surface. Then, when I pressed the shutter button, the camera metered the shot just as the picture was taken.

At least, I think that was it.

    Thanks for your help.

No problem 🙂. That sounds like the most likely reason for what happened.

A work-around you could try is to use manual mode. Spot meter the important part of the scene and then zero the meter adjusting aperture, shutter speed and ISO to suit.

Nicely done 🙂 I like the compositions of both.

I can see after you took the "1230" shot you moved to the right to place the moon between the tree's two trunks for the "1233" shot. Very nice 🙂

Thank you RLBur 🙂. I assume you mean the super moon photos from last night and not in my op. The silhouetted branches are a little clearer on my computer monitor than how they appear in my browser.

It was well after sunset when I took those photos whereas there was still some "day light" when I took the photos in my op of the moon through the trees.

Tried to shoot moon but weather was not cooperative, sky was cloudy and moon was lost in clouds 20 minutes after rise, so only shots I got were not very sharp due to atmosphere interference and did not have nice foreground. On plus side I managed to capture moon's rings 😁
