Have any of the organizers of this fantastic effort to save dpreview's digital "encyclopaedia" from Amazon's vandalism approached the manufacturers as yet. They should have a vital interest in keeping this going and growing.

Well, yes, but I would think that Canon, Sony etc should be quite interested in sponsoring these efforts financially, with adverts etc. It obviously is very important for them to keep this going.

You would think, but this is what Dave Etchells from Imaging Resource can teach us on the topic:

The struggles of IR and now the demise of DPR speaks to a general problem in the photo industry, and I suspect many others as well. Some companies were happy to reap the benefits of the vast work that went into sites like ours, but then treated them as if they were only vehicles for a handful of banner ads. If banners didn’t click, then the site must have no value, right? This is what happened to both sites. At one time at least some manufacturers realized the true value and supported us with advertising to maintain it. As times got tougher, though, that spirit faded and one result is what’s just happened to DPR.

Thy really don't get it then. It's all very well getting out amazing products but especially the semi professional photogs need to hear about it and the test results were a vital independent resource. Who would just trust the word of the manufacturers and their shills?
