If Mako had been moderating this thread, how many people would have been sandboxed?

I don't get this discussion. I never had an encounter with a mod at DPR. But I have of course heard about it and seen the mysteriously locked threads, so I understand the feelings. But why are we even discussing if DPR moderators should moderate here?

I would have thought that if we are going to have moderators, they would be members that are active here and "know us". To bring them in from outside this forum seems like a bad idea to me, either they are hated DPR mods or come from somewhere else. Not only because they aren't part of the community, but also because people who strive for such positions are often the least suited. In my experience, of course.

    Very wise of him!

From what I have read here, I can't imagine him getting a balanced and fair hearing.

In general, I don't see most people putting coming in front of people who very obviously dislike them strongly very high on their TODO list, whether the person is Pol Pot's and devil's child or not.

I do not know. I've looked through threads about moderation/moderators on DPReview and counted about +/- 25 out of 3600 members who expressed strong negative feelings.

You’ve based your opinion of an entire forum of thousands of threads by reading this one thread? Quite odd.

A shame, IMO, thought it might be different.

There are around three thousand posts here at dprevived… better get your readin’ boots on. lol

There are over 20,000 posts on DPRevived, but look which treads got the biggest amount of posts.

    @sagittarius
I only read the threads that interest me.

The difference is that, unlike on DPR, nobody seems to get blocked here. I thought that would never work, but blocking would probably create more noise and polemic.
Once you learn to avoid noise (certain posts/threads and certain members), you'll find that DPRevived is a good source of helpful information.

If you're not someone who gets in trouble with moderation, if you're not someone that voices a strong opinion, then this thread is likely not something that applies to you.

A lot of fellows here had a very difficult time on DPReview, they're glad to be here to be away from it, and likely wrongly (applies to me too) are concerned that DPRevived might start to tip that way.

On a side note, I'd be very reluctant to be on a forum where the creator of that forum tells a member that he has been moderating forums for twenty years, and he has determined from a couple of posts from said member, that the said members is a trouble maker and shouldn't be in the forum. If you are in that forum, I'd suggest that the little bit of noise that is bothering you here should be the least of your concerns.

    This here will go away.

I don't think he needs to present a case. Moderation in general was horrific on DPReview. A lot of members don't want him here. He probably don't want to be a mod here. No need to turn it into the National Enquirer.

Since I shoot Nikon, most of my experience is on what happened in the Nikon forum. And for whatever reason, someone in DPReview, up through to Amazon I suppose, wanted to eradicate any negative comments on the Zees, many of which they truly deserved. So it was delete, modify, threaten, ban. The Zeeites would come into the Nikon Fx forum, start threads or take over threads with an agenda. Again, anything anti Zee was deleted, modified, members threatened or banned.

This stuff was also a problem on the Canon forum. I have a PM from 2018 where twelve over fifteen Canon members took their case right to Scott Everett, DPReview's general manager. The person who created the PM said that Scott agreed that a large number of his posts should not have been removed, but nothing was done about it. So it appears it was over zealous moderation, but kinda, sorta with the blessing coming down from above.

So no one wants that to happen here, and yes, we may be a bit over the top in getting the point struck home (and struck home again) to Bob.

I've always thought that such things should be decided by multiple mods. If one mod thinks that someone should be banned or have their some of their posts deleted, then the posters or their posts should only be put into temporary jail until a majority of other moderators queried agreed, at which time it becomes permanent, and if the majority queried do not agree, the ban is lifted and/or the posts are made visible. If only a fraction of mods are to be queried for efficiency's sake, then they should be chosen randomly and not be chosen by the initiating mod.

But you clicked on a thread titled "Does DPReview's 'Mako2011' have any powers on this site?" as opposed to all the other threads available, and then commented that you don't like the discussion. Never once -- and I'm serious -- did I ever click on a thread with the title "What bag is best for [my camera setup]" on DPR, much less reply to a post in it expressing my dismay for the thread.

The thread title was not misleading as to what the content would be, but you chose to click on it and read. Then you chose to express your dismay about the content as opposed to posting content you felt was more favorable. Or, better yet, to have clicked on another thread, or started another thread, on a topic more to your tastes. Such was also common on DPR.

Comment on someone's photo, post a photo yourself, answer a question someone may have, ask a question you want to know yourself -- there are any number of things you can do that will contribute to making this site more to your liking. But you know, and I know, that bitch threads, troll threads, and "entertainment" threads get the most action, by far. That's true anywhere. The only place you'll not find that is where there is heavy handed moderation, which, as you can tell, is not something that a lot of people here care for.

So, let me take the opportunity to bitch -- when are notifications going to be working?! I can't tell if anyone has replied to a post I made or thread I started! Also, threaded view -- that's a must. It's seriously a pain wading through all the responses. What I am getting for the money I spend here?! : )

Great to have you here @GreatBustard!
    Lovely!

Money again. What the heck is going on?
You talk money. Admins are raking wads of cash out of this, mods are aleggedly being motivated by unreasonable amounts of that green paper motivation. I must be behind on this. Thought it is a forum, not a washing machine (not to say the proper term for bots). 😂
