That's actually software driven and I discovered it the other Day. I use dashes (minus sign) to separate some of my images with titles. I did that the other day and huge fonts appeared.

Hang on and I'll try it again using dashes under one letter

    A

Yep there it is again, so it's not actually the posters fault at all. It's to do with the formatting used here when using the minus/dash sign. ;-) It might happen with other symbols as well with larger fonts again. Not sure unless you folks try it.

    Again

yes, it is the poster's fault because the poster has the option to edit that styling out in the post editor using the escape character which will allow the minus signs to be displayed without the large font size for the letters.

Whether they choose to edit the styling out or not is their choice to make.

Sorry, I forgot we were in the presence of perfectness.

I was just correcting you incorrect statement. What is wrong with that?

Here, I'll fix your post for you.

Ahhh nothing, haven't got time for this at the moment, too busy going through a database.

Locking it would just cause the same conversation to pop up elsewhere. I have no idea who this Mako is but clearly some people have a lot to get off their chest about him!

Reading through these posts, a few people are missing the nuances as well. Bob taking some advice from Mako (and presumably rejecting other advice from him as part of the package) does not in any way indicate Bob has been hoodwinked or is going to cede privileges to Mako. It is perfectly possible to absorb experience from someone without becoming their lackey. And unless you have experience as a mod (I haven't and wouldn't), you perhaps don't appreciate the difficulties. We live in a diverse world, full of people with different personalities and different tolerances for certain kinds of behaviour. The mod is inevitably going to find themself in some pretty awkward situations and a lot of judgement is called for. Experience is needed to navigate choppy waters and someone passing on some of their experiences can be very useful, without the suggestion that admin have sold out to such people. Lay off the paranoia and don't prejudge things (or people) is sensible advice IMO.

Best way to stop a thread is to not post to it or read it. Lets see if you are able to do that :-) You shouldn't need someone else to decide for you.

Why, just finished sorting two databases. Is there an issue with that?

Thanks for that Alan. You guys seem to be doing a great job of getting the site up and functional.

Now back to the regular programming ...

Not sure where I said I would start off with a disrespectful position. I never said that anywhere. A bit of a leap on your part…almost twisting what I said to support a narrative you may have. I go in completely neutral in my discussions with someone I meet. Their behaviour is how I form my position as to whether I feel they have earned respect or not. And I have formed my opinion of Mako based upon his behaviour, what I experienced, and what other moderators have said. That is enough for me to not feel any respect towards him. That seems to be the overwhelming position of posters. Like I said before, I don’t think he’ll be here as a mod…so it really doesn’t matter. And I have nothing against you personally Bob…I just disagree with your position on Mako. Nothing more.

Man, I guess I have been living in a bubble. In 6 years at DPR, with 10k posts, in forums moderated by this Mako guy, I never heard from him once. I'm sorry some of you guys had a bad time, but the level of importance some are putting on this is surprising to me. Ragging on Bob for being emotionless, analytical and neutral in this situation is a good thing IMO. To those complaining about it, remember, you just might want the same treatment some day.

Anyway, the other thing I have learned is that exposure triangles and moderation are by far the hottest topics here. Glad we are so far removed from DPR.....LOL.

I did not read past the first page (15 or 20 messages) in this thread but there are lot of responses.

Personally, I never had any issue from him. On the contrary, he was very helpful with issues on my D7200, twice.

He knows a lot about cameras. I know he is passionate about what he knows. I have seen heated debates between him and others who disagree, but it all looked like someone very particular about their point of view. Nothing seemed like an attack against the other person.

I am not good with technology and may use terms in the wrong place. I have been criticized for lack of knowledge, but I know what I don't know and move on. That has never happened between me and Mako2011 (just some other members on the forum).

    YMMV

Well, if respect has to be earned, you wouldn't start off with it, would you? You'd wait until you thought that the respect had been earned. On the other hand, if everyone is due respect then you would start off with it. This is a bit of an equivocation thing. Everyone has a right to be treated with respect, but to be respected in opinion is something that is earned.

We are supposed to be here to talk about PHOTOGRAPHY. What is this thread about?

  • May 1, 2023, 4:40 p.m.

I never did that, and never would have, for the following reasons:
    1. This is a volunteer organisation, we don't 'hire' anyone. People volunteer to do things and we accept or reject their kind offer.
    2. Any decision is not mine. It is a group decision.
But, let me give you a realistic scenario. One of the tasks that moderators have to do on DPReview is to delete all the spam, all the bot posts, all the hack group accounts and so on. As a commercial site they should have paid for this, but they used unpaid volunteers to do it. It turns out that Mako was one of the best and most diligent at doing this (completely fits the personality that I'm beginning to understand). So, imagine that the person behind Mako volunteers to us to use her expertise to deal with the spam, bot posts, hack group accounts and the like. To do this she will need permissions to delete threads and accounts. Do we accept the offer or not? In either case, give your reasoning.
    BTW, this is completely hypothetical.
