Still trying to figure out how to get a notice if someone replies to a thread I started or a thread in which I'm participating. I've activated those "options" in my "profile", but nothing seems to be happening. It is a real PITA to have to scroll thought pages of stuff just to see if there's been a post.

    Ideas?

    Hi Greg,

Great to see you here. I love the photo of Joy in the millrace, don't think I've ever seen that one before.

    Best,

    Den

    Echo that.

Nice to see so many familiar ex-DPR folks making an appearance here. It's already starting to gain some momentum, I think.

Very glad to see you, too, my friend I've never met. I'm giving it a try.

I wonder if we could revive the weekly Show, Tell and Critique thread here? Maybe even the mini-challenges. All lots of fun.

    Greg,

I just made a copy of the rules for the mini-challenge and I'll give the contest an initial try post April 10, se if we can build some momentum here.

    Best,

Den Artman (interesting how our last names are so similar!)

When you upload a photo from your computer using the little "up" arrow on the far right of your menu line (probably not the right tech term) at the top of the reply form, a reference to it will appear at the bottom left of your reply form. Finish writing your reply. Then, place your cursor wherever in your message you want the pic to appear; click on the little box shape just to the right of the reference to the pic and a line of gobbledy-gook will appear in your message at that spot. Hit "Preview" and you should then be able to see the pic. If all looks, OK, hit "Post Reply".

I thought I'd register here to check it out as a possible successor for me to DPReview. I registered under my actual name rather than the rather silly "Birddogman" nom de plume.

Hi Greg, thought I'd join you here !

Just corrected the spelling of my username to "Ontarian". I had previously missed the "i".

Great to see some familiar names here, as well as a lot of new ones.

One weird side effect is that other family of the first one to pass away may be seriously cut out of heritage: when one spouse dies, the bulk is inherited by the other, when that one dies, their immediate family inherits everything with the inlaws being cut out.

So if the respective inlaw families are not on a good footing, serious imbalance may result. I mean, the good thing is that you are not going to be the one sorting this out. No idea whether one can avoid this headache with additional paperwork.

Hello Greg. I'm also watching to see where the DPR folks land. This might be the place.

    Hope that the upload worked!

Hope to see many friends here if DPReview really shuts down!

    Greg,
At the very top of the thread

    2023-04-19 13_48_42-Window.png

is a little box which defaults to disabled, but you can click one of the other choices if you want to track the thread.

Once you do that, it'll show up in
    dprevived.com/threads/subscribed/

Your own threads (threads you started) show up in
    dprevived.com/threads/my/

In the thread view, the box next to [All Categories] has multiple choices, so you can see everything, threads you started, subscribed, etc.

To get to the very bottom of the thread, click the text at the far right which ends in minutes/hours/days.
To get to the "new" posts in the thread, click on the icon at the far left. (The "new" function is a bit strange on where it jumps)

If you hover over various parts of the line, you'll see that they go to links also. I've not tested them all.

Good to see you here, Dak! I only check in here occasionally because the interface here is still quite primitive and I can't seem to get notification if someone replies to a thread.

Yes, what you say is quite true - and something I dealt with frequently in my 50 years as a tax attorney. Hopefully, our "paperwork" eliminates any such issues. While either one of us is alive, we will have access to all of the combined investments, assets, lands, etc. So, barring some kind of government collapse or screw-up, we should remain reasonably financially secure even after one of us dies. But, on the second death, assets are traced back to before we started living together and anything that was mine or can be traced to something that was mine goes to my surviving daughter and the children of my deceased daughter; anything that was Nancy's or can be traced to something that was Nancy's before we got together, goes to her son. Anything we acquire with joint funds during our marriage is split. I believe in openness, so we've shared all of this, including the documents, with the families and everyone seems happy with this.

HI, Harvey. I'm giving it a try. Not too impressed so far, but everything is new and DPR had 25 years to grow into what it is. We'll see.

Perhaps once DPR actually dies and we start trying to do Challenges and weekly photo posting threads (like the old ST&C thread) things will feel better here.
