    Good Morning all,

As is obvious to all, the Thread is not getting enough participation to justify it's existence.
The intention is to wind it up.
Many thanks to those that did post here, some great shots,; but, we need to be realistic.
The purpose of a Forum is to provide a platform for Users and without at least a workable group,
    it really doesn't serve anyone.
In case you had something on the back burner, we'll leave this thread (#5) open for a while so you can post them.
Nice to have met you all, I'll see you on another Thread !

    Ron.

I think the small things seen up close thread would lend itself to a weekly, fortnightly or monthly. It has been quiet lately but it is typically quite active.

I dont think the problem described is unique to this topic. The contents of other weekly threads here have become very predictable and uninteresting. Maybe this is in part due to the dreary winter weather that certainly afflicts where I live; but I think having repetitive thread titles that restrict the nature of topics has a lot to answer for.

I shall take my camera with me today, even though the path I shall follow will be a familiar one, and hope to see and record something different and interesting to others.

I think the weekly threads do serve a purpose. They stop posts from becoming overlong - such as the "seen up close" thread. But, of course, there's no reason why you can't start your own thread on any subject (I did "Waterfalls" the other week).

As promised earlier, here is what I saw today: (Apologies that it is not macro photos, but see above!)

I took my usual Friday afternoon walk through the centre of Vienna today, to see whether I could come up with anything new about the area worth photographing.

Over Christmas and New Year we have been plagued by tourists. I wonder what they see in coming here for this weather -- it doesnt look like a good use of vacation time to me! With temperatures hovering around 1°C or 32°F, the weather-appropriate clothing is not very exciting.

Looking the other direction we can see here the Apple Store on the right and the Nespresso store on the left. Given the extremely high rentals in this part of Vienna, which I am sure Apple can afford, I reflect that selling coffe in little capsules must also be a lucrative business.

Surprisingly, the lights are still up, more than two weeks after Epiphany!

This is Stefansplatz, which will be completely closed off on Saturday for the consecration and enthronement of the new Archbishop of Vienna in the cathedral. All seats have been allocated to the high and mighty, mostly politicians.

Returning by a parallel street, I pass a shop that I never customize. When I went in to enquire about buying this camera I found the atmosphere rather snotty. Reluctantly, I was put down on the list to be notified when the camera was in stock. I never heard from them, though I read that a member of another forum was able to walk in and buy one on the spot a couple of weeks later. My custom went to the friendly store where I bought my Canon equipment.

Top of the line Porsches are not rare in this part of town!

Indeed, I didn't understand the suggestion of the "seen up close" thread as a substitute, now that it's up to 595 responses as we speak.

Furthermore, I think that periodic threads, e.g. "Weekly" in the Macro category should be more than just one sub-topic due to the huge variety of close-up or macro genres.

Perhaps more members should comment on these opinions

    Hello everyone.
I've always thought that individual posts are ideal, where you upload and comment on one or very few photos at a time. But the reality is that there are very few contributors to the macro topic, and the threads were piling up with hardly any comments. So, the "seen up close" thread was started as an open topic to facilitate participation from people who, for whatever reason, didn't feel comfortable starting an individual thread and I think it, more or less, served its purpose. As things stand now, I think it doesn't really matter what it's called, how often it's posted, or how many replies it accumulates…

I got confused by the sudden appearance of five threads to do with macro - all with lots of '>>>>>>' and '<<<<<<' in their titles.

If they are now truly "closed" maybe they should go to the Dumpster so as to clean up the Macro topic list a bit?

My idea of special purpose threads is that they don't need to have a given time frame. Weekly is convenient for threads that have enough traffic. If they don't have much traffic, make them monthly or open, and start a new one when appropriate.

I feel the Small Things Seen Up Close has got a bit long. I had been thinking that next time I post I will start a #2 version but photography for me has been on the back burner for a while (besides most of the Dragonflies have disappeared)...
