I'd give the First not-from-a-film-camera DSLR to the E2. Which, ironically, was called the D1 in the beginning and would have been the E1 when Nikon decided to use Electronic rather than Digital for the name. The E1-D1 (sounds like a Star Wars droid!) was not produced in sales quantity. They wanted to up the sensor res first.
Yes, it used some F4 bits but then the D1 we all know and love used some F100 bits. However, both were envisioned as digital SLRs from the beginning.
I will say that the D1 was a far better camera to use.
Perhaps we ought to forget all about the E series even though you and I still have at least one hanging aboit.

You don't have to mix, the multiple prototypes with the real production cameras.

The E2 was produced in quantity. In multiple variants. Then on to the E3. All prior to the D1. And the E series isn't a digital back on a film body as are the Kodak models. It's an entirely new design. One that turned out to be a dead end, but often times entirely new designs work out that way. Lord knows I have had my share of such. Some of which are still on my Shelves of Obsolete Electronics right along with my E2. ;)
It was only the E1, labelled D1, which was produced in pre-series (small) quantities. It was shown off at trade shows though. Caused quite a stir, too.

Your collection is MIND BOGGLING. I love your write ups on vintage gear. They all still produce amazing images. IMO, the old stuff creates more appealing images than the over processed new stuff out there now.
