This is the weekly Collegial Show Your Photos Any Brand thread where we invite you to show your own pictures. It is collegial in that it is a pleasant and friendly place among photographers to share.

I will begin this thread each Monday (Pacific Standard Time) to give each of you all the chance to share your weekend photos with us, for those that follow a regular work week schedule and choose to do it that way. But the pictures can be taken at any time with any camera, including your cell phone. It's open to all skill levels from beginners to advanced. The images posted can be anything from casual snaps to extraordinary. I'll be sure to comment to each of your photos, if you choose to share. Replies from others are encouraged also.

The intent of this thread to mainly to just show photos in a relaxed way and to generate replies or comments about them. Generally I'm not planning to critique any image unless asked. But I or we may ask things about a photo that may develop into a discussion, always being friendly and helpful. It has been a request that I mention this and from what I've learned from past experience: Can you ask a member first if they would mind you editing their photos?

Remember it's all about the enjoyment of taking pictures regardless of what we have. We can learn from each. Please share any tips or techniques too. A narrative sometimes also helps. Thanks everyone for your participation.

    Subject: HDR Night Photos

Last month I took a few HDR photos at night. I think this autumn and winter I may be taking more of these kinds of pictures. I would hope to see some of your HDR photos taken at night also.

Do you have to have a special camera to take HDR pictures?

    David,

I'm not familiar with a lot of different cameras, but from what I understand that yes only certain cameras can take HDR photos...unless a person takes pictures on a tripod of different exposures and then combines them with software. Now I use four models which are the Canon T7i (800D), Canon M50 Mark II, Canon RP and Canon R8. I used my Canon R8 for these HDR photos. The processing is done within the camera. I tried to make HDR photos with software one time, but I found the camera did a much better job at it.

I used the green "My Menu Tabs" to quickly access the section to take HDR photos. Everything is processed within the camera (very fast). I also like to focus bracket and stack photos too. This camera will do all of it, so again I do not have to use software. It's particularly useful for flowers.

We had a weekend with some reasonable good weather again. Didn't see the sun but no rain so okay for a hike again 😁
Visited National Park Dwingelderveld again, but this time we followed some trails in the most northern part.
And Autumn is definitely here, more leaves turn red an yellow and even more mushrooms available 😅

I discover that my RP and R6 will do HDR. I must explore it. (Your results are excellent.) Does it do things you cant achieve by processing raw files?

    Photobygms,

I do like all the autumn colors. 😀 I have been taking pictures of colorful leaves too. But I have not found fungi as good as you have found. You captured them well.

    David,

I do not process a lot of raw files, so I can't answer your question very well. The few raw files I processed were no better than the JPEGs I was getting from the camera.

  • Oct. 14, 2025, 7:38 a.m.

    Digi,

Obviously, YMMV, as they say. I only shoot raw. The processing doesnt take long in PhotoLab, but the results are much better than most jpegs out of the camera. I suspect that the two ways of working can lead to similar results, except that, if I understand it correctly, HDR is an automatic in-camera process, whereas one has full control over processing raw results on the computer.

    Best,

    David

    David,

As you know, taking HDR photos in-camera, is something that only takes a few seconds...push the button...and there you go. I can take them handheld too, but I make sure that I keep the camera steady. With my Canon R8 I can choose to take HDR photos continuously. I can change the dynamic range too. So when a person is outdoors at night around buildings, we can take hundreds of them hand-held with no processing needed on the computer. But I should also note, with those in-camera HDR images, we can also adjust them a little on the computer.

I've heard from other people that they found that RAW images that are post processed and in-camera JPEGs gave them the same or nearly the same result. Can you take some RAW pictures and then some as in-camera JPEGs (of the same subject) and show us the differences? It would be helpful to see a variety of images, not just those that have extreme lighting conditions etc. I've heard from some people that they take RAW + JPEG images, and mostly use the JPEGs that were produced by the camera and then post process some of the RAW images (where they felt they would be better). Do you find that would work for someone like you?

Thank you for your contribution to this topic. I appreciate your expertise with the high quality of photos that you have shown us in the past.

    Softmarmotte,

Thank you for your wonderful photos, of a sunset and a beautiful mountain scene. I assume that the second photo is an HDR one. Is that correct?

I noticed that HDR in-camera processing of RAW files saves the HDR image as a jpg.

Just out of curiosity, I wondered if you could save HDR photos as a RAW file in DPP4.

My answer was no. DPP4 saves the processed file as a jpg. There are some options. You can save it as a TIFF file or a DNG, etc., but not as a RAW.

Here's a 1-stop bracket that I did a few minutes ago in DPP4. I tweaked the blue color a little. It's almost like using a color polarizer.

    1 stop HDR.JPG

    I wasn't all that happy with a 2-stop bracket.

    Steve,

Thanks for joining in on the topic. I found with some of my in-camera HDR photos, that I do have to make a few adjustments to them sometimes on the computer. It's hard to get them just right sometimes with the way our eye/brain sees them. But it's our art, so anything goes. 😀
