The Weekly Collegial Show Your Photos Starting 17 June 2024 Any Brand

This is the weekly Collegial Show Your Photos Any Brand thread where we invite you to show your own pictures. It is collegial in that it is a pleasant and friendly place among photographers to share.

I will begin this thread each Monday (Pacific Standard Time) to give each of you all the chance to share your weekend photos with us, for those that follow a regular work week schedule and choose to do it that way. But the pictures can be taken at any time with any camera, including your cell phone. It's open to all skill levels from beginners to advanced. The images posted can be anything from casual snaps to extraordinary. I'll be sure to comment to each of your photos, if you choose to share. Replies from others are encouraged also.

The intent of this thread to mainly to just show photos in a relaxed way and to generate replies or comments about them. Generally I'm not planning to critique any image unless asked. But I or we may ask things about a photo that may develop into a discussion, always being friendly and helpful. It has been a request that I mention this and from what I've learned from past experience: Can you ask a member first if they would mind you editing their photos?

Remember it's all about the enjoyment of taking pictures regardless of what we have. We can learn from each. Please share any tips or techniques too. A narrative sometimes also helps. Thanks everyone for your participation.

For the last several months, I have been shooting in manual mode, but I decided that I was spending all my time fiddling with the main dial, trying to get the shutter speed right to ensure a proper exposure.

I decided to try Aperture Priority mode for a while and just let the camera set the speed. In one sense, I feel like I'm not "doing my job", but in another sense, it's a lot less stressful.

This little guy is coming along nicely. The first shot is f/11@1/125. The second is f/8@1/320. They convey slightly different moods, don't you think? The first is slightly more dark and moody. The second is a little more bright and airy.

The third, taken at f/5.6@ 1/60th is brighter and airier (is that a real word?) still. It really demonstrates to me the difference in depth of field, even in flowers that are just a few inches apart.

When taking pictures of flowers, trying to find the best settings for what we are trying to achieve can be challenging. In addition to finding a nice looking flower or flowers, we do have to consider the depth of field, lighting, the shutter speed, surroundings and the backgrounds. My favorite is the second photo.

Here's some more HDR (high dynamic range) photos I took at night in Portland, Oregon last Friday. I think next time I'll try to take more of these kinds of pictures at ISO levels lower than 12800. I liked the photos taken at ISO3200 the best.

Nice flowers @stevet1, We both do shoot in AV most of the time.

Those HDR photos are nice @Digirame perhaps the last two could have a bit more contrast to get darker skies (but that is what I would have done)

And after a busy week we did have some time left to go out for a short hike.
We also had to do some gardening and we had to fix a hinge at our fence and gate and as usual it did not go the way we wanted, but we got it fixed.
We can park our cars again behind the entrance gate and close it the way it should be closed and locked 😀
And after all that we saw that sun again so couldn't resist to go for a short hike at the Balloërveld reserve.
This is a reserve close to our home and we like to call it our other backyard 🤣

And the weather did change again, rain was closing in

@stevet1 I shoot in aperture priority mode (though I still think of it as AV) maybe 80% of the time. Otherwise I use shutter speed priority when aiming for a particular motion effect. Manual I use only for panoramas, HDRs, and night time shots.
Nice flower shots. My favourite is the third one.

Great night time HDRs Digirame. They look pretty good, though I think some are a little noisier than would be ideal.

Those are some beautiful photos @Photobygms. I'm a big fan of the starburst in #7.

Sorry for disappearing for two months. It's kind of a bad habit I'm trying to get out of.
BTW, what was the reasoning behind changing the name of these threads? Is it to encourage participation from non Canon users?

Thanks for the reply about the HDR photos. The reason that the skies are not always completely dark in every photo, is because we've had a lot of cloud cover. There's been some rain too. Yesterday we had rain in spots and this morning we had some drizzle. We are in the dry season, but light rain has been continuing. Looking at your photos, we must have a similar climate. I don't know if your summers are dry or not. Typically for us they are.

I don't know why I'm so fascinated by clouds, but I am. 😀 So I'm glad to see so many of them in your photos. I really liked seeing the sheep in the third image. That's wonderful that you are able to get out and take so many pictures in your "backyard". 😀 I love to do hiking also. Getting out and about, is the reason we can find so many opportunities to take pictures.

Thanks. Yes, I liked the ISO3200 photos the best. I was walking with some other people in the dark, who were moving quite fast. So I didn't have the opportunity to try to take them at lower ISO levels (by sticking around). It's a little dangerous in our city to walk alone at night, so I just took these as quick snaps. But if I'm in an area with more people around, maybe I can try to get them with slower shutter speeds and lower ISO levels.

It's good to hear from you. The changing of the name of this thread was after David decided to no longer co-host this show-your-photos thread with me. I came up with the idea to change the name because I thought the activity on Dprevived was not large enough to just support pictures from only one brand. Plus we already were accepting non-Canon pictures (including cell phones). I asked for people's comments and ideas and this is what we came up with as a title for the thread. So, in that respect it was a group effort, but something I initiated. It has been positive. We have had a few other people lately join our group and have shown excellent pictures that were very interesting.

Alas... a high wind came up and broke the stem of the lily plant. The flower is no more.

Life can be fleeting at times. Best to seize those moments while you can.

With Av, I'm still a little torn. I do like those slow shutter speeds. I think they bring out the texture in things more.

Subject: Coming of the White Man

During the last week of May, I visited a statue of two Native American Indians that was gifted to a park in Portland, Oregon in 1904. It was called the "Coming of the White Man". I read a long time ago that there was once a bow there, but some vandals removed it. It was not replaced. You can see a portion of this bow still in the right hand. I hope you like these photos. It's amazing art.

Edit: I cannot find yet the source of my information that a bow was originally there. But I did see an old photograph of something that was there, so at this point it's not definite that a bow was there. If I find out, I will let you all know.
