I'm in Seattle this week for work. I wanted a room with a view, yet close enough to our office so I could walk to work in the morning. After consulting google maps for walk-ability, I settled on a place with a "waterfront" view, that google assured me was only a short 10 minute walk to the office. What it failed to tell me however, was that the walk had a steep grade, and would require climbing 100s of stairs. I showed up at work all sweaty this morning, but managed to snap a few clicks along the way. Critique away.

    The view from the room:

    Mtgoatee,

I hope you enjoy your trip in Seattle. The water at Puget Sound looks so peaceful. We've had a few dry days in the Pacific Northwest, so hopefully you'll be able to continue taking pictures without too much rain. In particular, I liked seeing the tall building that was surrounded by the cloud at the top.

Subject: Black Friday Camera & Lens

Hi all. Here's the Black Friday camera and lens I was talking about last time (see the photo). It just arrived late today. I really didn't want to buy the lens but it was only $50 (USD) more (it came together as a kit). So rather than taking a chance to pay a little less for the body only, I decided to click the button. I think it was a wise choice. It seems like these special deals sold out early. II just ordered a lens hood a few minutes ago. It's now late in the evening, so I won't take pictures with it outdoors until tomorrow or later. I'll read up on the recommended settings etc. first before I get too far into it. I bought a memory card yesterday, so I should be all set to go.

The lighting wasn't the best etc. with me taking this indoors with my Canon M50 Mark II camera...just enough to show you my new toy. 😀

    Lens Model - EF-M15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM

Edit: OK, the battery was all charged up. I was playing around with it in the menu, setting up the My Menu tabs. I also found that the silent shutter was better than the Canon RP so I could use higher shutter speeds. Also with the Canon RP the controls were on auto, so sometimes I had less than 1/250th of a second and the high ISO level was limited to 12800. I tested the Canon R8 as high as 1/8000th of a second with the silent shutter. Last time with the Canon RP that was annoying for me that the shutter speeds could not go higher than 1/250th of a second and sometimes were slower. That made it difficult during an indoor performance where there was a lot of movement. Wow...I sure like being spoiled with this newer technology. 😀 I will still use my Canon RP and my other cameras for different reasons (at least for the time being).

Subject: Indoor Performance with Too Slow of a Shutter Speed

Here's an example of an indoor performance with the Canon RP where I was forced to have only 1/200th of a second, with auto controls. I'm so glad with the Canon R8 that I won't have that limitation any longer. I should mention that there was a workaround with the Canon RP where the photographer could pick the best of two images doing it another way, but that's another story. 😀 I just didn't like doing that, because sometimes I could not tell which of the two was better.

    Digi,

It’s an interesting picture, and I have no problem with 1/200 sec (what was wrong with f/5.6 or wider?); but I think the very high ISO has caused the skin tones to be over-exposed.

@Digirame aah the R8, my betterhalf likes it a lot, she does use the R8 and RP together and likes the size.

@mtgoatee, Seattle seems a nice place to visit, nice photos!

@davidwien, Dig used F7.1 because that lens does not go any further at 105mm 😉
    That lens does:
    24-26mm = f/4.0
    27-36mm = f/4.5
    37-49mm = f/5.0
    50-62mm = f/5.6
    63-79mm = f/6.3
    80-105mm = f/7.1
But the photo does show again that using high ISO settings can still deliver good photos

Ah! Thank you, I didnt realise that. But don't you agree that it's still over-exposed? How about 1.5 - 2 stops darker for the faces (either with EV comp or ISO)? I dont recall my RP being inflexible in this way: I must get it out and reacquaint myself with it.

They a bit on the bright side (looking closer at it) a stop or perhaps 2 stops might make a difference.

I like seeing all of the bright lights. The Christmas tree is beautifully decorated.

    David,

I probably should have darkened the photo a little more in post. The problem with using the silent shutter in the Canon RP, is that the controls are automatic. I have no choice in the aperture or shutter speed. I found with increasing the focal length of the lens, that the shutter speed could be higher. That all goes away with the Canon R8 where now I have complete control of the settings. Now the technology of the Canon RP is about five years old, or thereabouts.

OK, I'll darken the photo some. I mainly wanted to show the motion blur. I rarely show you all one of my bad images.

Edit: Also 1/200th of a second is much too slow for the motion at this particular time. I could show you examples, of when the performers had slowed down and everything was sharp. Of course, those are the ones I showed previously, I think sometime in June of this year. Would you like to see some of them again? You would also see that ISO12800 is OK.

Subject: Revised Indoor Performance with Too Slow of a Shutter Speed

OK, I darkened it some. My main purpose of showing this was to demonstrate the problem with motion blur. Photobygms who has both the Canon RP and Canon R8 can correct me if I'm wrong, but with the silent shutter with the Canon RP the controls are automatic. I cannot pick the aperture or shutter speed. The camera does that for me. I took this with the silent shutter because photography was not allowed. But they permitted me to continue because I was not disturbing the audience. I also tilted the LCD screen up so people sitting around me could not see that either, although I could have shut that off entirely too.

Also sometimes stage performance lighting can make it difficult in situations like this. Again, this is a bad image for a reason...to demonstrate what I should be able to avoid when using the Canon R8. The Canon R8 is also supposed to have a lot better dynamic range.

    Subject: A Better Image

Here's where the Canon RP picked 1/250th of a second and the people were not moving as much, so there is no motion blur. Also the stage lighting constantly was changing, so sometimes it was favorable and other times it was not. If the lighting was brighter the ISO level could be lower. I believe I had picked autoISO. But again I could not control the shutter speed or aperture. Well I could have a higher shutter speed with a longer focal length. That was about all I could do. But I got dozens of nice images. I went to the performance twice and even though clearly photography was not allowed (as stated in the beginning to everyone), I was permitted to do this with the silent shutter, no flash or bright lights. Next time by opening up the aperture a little more, increasing the shutter speed some and having better dynamic range, these types of photos should be better with the Canon R8.

    Photobygms,

Yes, the size of the Canon R8 is great. I like it too. Right now, I have a small lens on it without a hood. When I get the hood, I should line up the Canon R8 with my Canon M-series cameras and DSLR cameras, so you all can get an idea of the size. It's really nice & compact. 😀

Just question (only for information) - can you use EV correction with silent shutter?
Another question, looking at your second, darker edit - are faces overexposed even in raw file?

    ArvoJ,

With the Canon R8 I can use the EV correction with silent shutter. I just tested it; it works great. I don't believe I could use it for the Canon RP, in that the controls were automatic (with the silent shutter). I'd like to see what Photobygms would say about it later since he has both cameras too. He's in the Netherlands right now and I think it's night time there.

For those pictures at the performance, I took them as SOOC JPEGs. With the lighting being as what it was, for better images I probably should have taken them as RAW and adjusted them in post. Again the lighting constantly changed in intensity and the colors too. From that what I read, the Canon R8 is supposed to have a lot better dynamic range, so I'm curious what they would look like. Next time, I'll see if I can take photos at indoor performances like this with both cameras and compare them.
