    David,

That crane is enormous. Where I live we often see tower cranes on construction projects.

    Steve,

That's a good capture of the ground hog. That's interesting that it can stand up like that.

@davidwien I've seen Strabag a lot during the time we stayed in Imst, Tirol.

@stevet1 Is that same one that you "shot" with the cats earlier? 😉

@Digirame That is a nice Hummingbird, here in the Netherlands we only see Hummingbird in Zoo's.
We did see them in Golden, Canada while enjoying our breakfast in a B&B 😀

Had a busy week, and the weather is not that great, but we had some luck today.
We took our bikes and managed to enjoy a nice ride. With a few raindrops at the start, but after that it did stay dry.
It started to rain again when we got home 😁
Decided to take the Eos R with the RF 24-105 F4L and the Sigma 60-600S.

    Photobygms,

I like the bird pictures, particularly the two on the nest. Are they all storks?

David, Yes all are White Storks, and it's only a small selection of them, We did a quick count and saw about 40 at that pasture

I am curious, why did you shoot every picture with f1.7?

  • May 25, 2024, 8:07 p.m.

If that is a question for me...

The simple (smart-arse) answer is "because I can with the Leica Q3 lens". 😀

My other camera is a Canon R6 and nearly all the lenses I have (only one of them is an L-series lens) need to be stopped down to get the resolution I like. The Leica gives an amazing resolution wide open and with a good depth of field. Thus I see no need to reduce the aperture much of the time. That said, I have only had the camera since November and am still experimenting with it.

Done in Sepia. I toned down the brightness a little.

    Photobygms,

Thanks for your comments about the hummingbird. From what I recall, I had only seen one other time in my life a hummingbird perched like that, that was not near a feeder. So it was indeed a rare occurrence.

    Photobygms,

I'm glad to hear the weather permitted you all to go out riding on your bikes. I'm also glad you brought the big lens with you, so that we could see the wildlife up close too. That's neat to see the storks on a nest. I like seeing the cows in the pasture too.

    David,

The photos look good at F1.7 with adequate depth of field with the short focal lengths. As you know it's not necessary to take them at that aperture with the high shutter speeds, but it's something a lot of us cannot do. It's a novelty for you; I'm glad you are enjoying your new toy. 😀 I may be able to take pictures at F3.5 or F4.0. I don't have expensive lenses, that is those that are over $1200 (USD).

    Steve,

I liked seeing horse in the pasture. Once I was able to take pictures of some horses near us. Recently I went back to that area to see if the horses were still at the same place, but I did not see them. Horses can be good photo opportunities. Does showing this in sepia make it look like a very old photo? Is that the reason you did it that way?

  • May 26, 2024, 2:48 p.m.

    Digi,

You are quite correct: one can use smaller apertures with longer exposures and still get a well-exposed image. But I think this lens looks good at max aperture, so I use it. I dont think I can get that depth of field with my Canon f/1.8 lenses wide open. The ND filters I got recently enable me to use f/1.7 with longer exposures. As I said, I am still experimenting! 😀

    Subject: Stormy Weather

I wanted to share with you the significance of showing those Spring Fun photos. It was a little unusual to see so many people outside enjoying the sunshine in May. The reality is most of the time we recently have had clouds and light rain. Here's one photo showing that. Even when I went to the air show, there were showers. We haven't had a lot of precipitation (like buckets of rain). It's just that it has been constant. If it has not been lightly raining, it's been cloudy. The sun is seen here and there, but not too much.

If you have any interesting storm clouds, please share them.

    Dig,

Yes. I was feeling in an Old-West cowboyish kind of mood that day. Did you catch the fog behind him? It really was that foggy that day.

    Steve,

Now that you tell me it is fog, I see it on the top side of the image. Today, we finally got some solid sun with a few clouds. It has been a long time with clouds and light rain.
