This is the weekly Collegial Show Your Photos Any Brand thread where we invite you to show your own pictures. It is collegial in that it is a pleasant and friendly place among photographers to share.

I will begin this thread each Monday (Pacific Standard Time) to give each of you all the chance to share your weekend photos with us, for those that follow a regular work week schedule and choose to do it that way. But the pictures can be taken at any time with any camera, including your cell phone. It's open to all skill levels from beginners to advanced. The images posted can be anything from casual snaps to extraordinary. I'll be sure to comment to each of your photos, if you choose to share. Replies from others are encouraged also.

The intent of this thread to mainly to just show photos in a relaxed way and to generate replies or comments about them. Generally I'm not planning to critique any image unless asked. But I or we may ask things about a photo that may develop into a discussion, always being friendly and helpful. It has been a request that I mention this and from what I've learned from past experience: Can you ask a member first if they would mind you editing their photos?

Remember it's all about the enjoyment of taking pictures regardless of what we have. We can learn from each. Please share any tips or techniques too. A narrative sometimes also helps. Thanks everyone for your participation.

Subject: Ecola State Park June 2013

I was at Ecola State Park in Oregon a little over two weeks ago. It was very foggy. Despite that, I did manage to get quite a few photos. But I thought I would start off showing you one picture I took over 11 years ago when we had some sunshine.

  • Sept. 23, 2024, 5:18 p.m.

After last week's rain, the sun shone very brightly in the city on Friday afternoon, and the dynamic range of light intensity was very wide, with dark shadows in contrast.

This scene may be familiar to some of you: the Neuer Markt, beneath which is an excellent car park that recognises my car's registration.

    L1000996_b.jpg

The top of the hotel actually looked better two hours later:

    L1000999_b.jpg

It was impossible to get a photo of the Carmelite Church without tourist groups. The Habsburg royalty are buried in the crypt in many exhuberant sacophagi. (Their hearts are preserved in the Augustine Church 250 metres away!)

    L1001003_b.jpg

On the other side of the square are plaques to other famous inhabitants. The first is the composer, Joseph Haydn, who lived there for years in a building long since demolished. (A pity the engraver couldnt notate the music correctly!)

    L1001030_c.jpg

One hundred or so years later, Mark Twain stayed in a house two doors away.

    L1001002_b.jpg

Between these two buildings and around the corner is a flower stall -- lovely flowers, but not cheap!

    L1001009_b.jpg

And on the other side of Kärntnerstraße, the Maltese Church. For this I really needed the Canon with the 15mm shift lens...

    L1001013_b.jpg

Although the sun was bright the shadows were long at 4pm, and I noticed for the first time the geometrical pattern of this department store. If you look carefully you can see the spire of Stefansdom behind the tree.

    L1001019_b.jpg

A little further up the street and it opens out into Stefansplatz. More shadows, that look better left dark than if I processed them to make the tourists visible!

    L1001028_b.jpg

I found it very interesting to notice different aspects of a street scene that I know well, exposed by the unusually stark lighting.

    David,

Yes, I know what you mean about the dynamic range that we experience around buildings on sunny days. I usually try to find something that is completely in the sun or completely in the shadows when around buildings. It's tough to do sometimes when we want to photograph a certain thing. That's interesting about Mark Twain. He inhabited close to the area that I visited last summer in California and Nevada.

Thanks for the tour around your city. 😀 That's great you have now some sunshine.

    xpatUSA,

The spider is interesting. I also saw a spider yesterday who appeared to have eaten another spider by our doorway too. I just checked and all I saw was the dead "skeleton" of that spider. The spiders come to eat insects, that are attracted by our porch light.

@Digirame, a nice set, I like those with the rocks and the beach, those do remind me at the beach and coastal trails near Ucluelet (BC) on Vancouver Island we visited in 2019
After a quick search, it's only about 700kms between Ecola State park and Ucluelet/Vancouver Island 😁

@davidwien So storm Boris has left and the weather is better again, nice to hear! and again a nice sightseeing tour in Wien for us

@xpatUSA, nice (little) spider with his/her lunch.

We are still busy renovation, all old stuff is gone (kitchen, toilets and bathroom) and we're sort of camping in our own home.
so not much from us at the moment..

    Photobygms,

I feel your pain. We're just coming off a month of the exact same thing. We did manage to keep the bathroom, so we at least had running water - it wasn't hot though. I'm glad it's almost over. Living out of boxes was starting to get pretty old.

@davidwien we do make a few phone photos but all the gear is locked in a air tight closet due all the dust the contractors make and made.

@stevet1 we do have running water they created a temporary water tap for us, and they provided us with a dual plate and a chemical toilet.
And luckily we can take a shower at my mothers place

But that approach is to refuse to rise to the challenge. Personally I prefer to push the envelope. One problem is the conversion to jpeg, the compression algorithm of which often compromises dynamic range.

He wrote a very interesting essay on the German language.

It went away this morning — temporarily, I hope.

    Dan,

Thanks. 😀 The last four pictures were taken on the north side of Indian Beach at the Ecola State Park. We were just getting ready to leave and I thought I would see what it looked like from there. I was glad I did, because the scenery looked great with the fog. The fog wasn't too severe so some things could be seen. That helped make it nice.

    Photobygms,

Thanks. I was on Vancouver Island once. We took the ferry from Port Angeles in Washington state. Vancouver Island is a photographer's "heaven". 😀 It's a great tourist attraction. The city of Victoria has a lot of interesting buildings.

    David,

That's great you rise to the challenge with high dynamic range. To me, I rise to the challenge to taking interesting photos without high dynamic range (if I can). For example, I might see some interesting people or cars coming down the street in late afternoon. The shadows of the buildings will make everything dark. But directly ahead of me will be the bright sunshine higher up in the sky. So I what I have to force myself to do, is take the pictures at the side, so the background of bright lighting is gone or limited to a small space. That's my "lazy" way of taking lots of pictures. It's really hard (at least for me it is) because I'm focusing so much on the subject matter and that in a way I want to forget about the background. But I know that I can't. Because I learned a long time ago, that the entire picture is important, not just the main subject matter. Saying that, I really appreciate you taking the extra steps to rise to the challenge with high dynamic range. There are times it is very challenging for all of us photographers.

Well, in this case (as shown below) I stood to the side for two reasons. First to avoid the bright background (seen on the far right) and to not get run over. But this was a small car show, so people were still walking on the street and everyone in this area was driving slow. But it's one of hundreds of photos I took to avoid that bright light in the background while being in building shadows.

The car lights are on, because it was getting dark. The sun hadn't quite set yet, but was close to doing so. The ISO level was high for that reason. That's a 1960 or 1961 Corvette.
