This is the weekly Collegial Show Your Photos Any Brand thread where we invite you to show your own pictures. It is collegial in that it is a pleasant and friendly place among photographers to share.

I will begin this thread each Monday (Pacific Standard Time) to give each of you all the chance to share your weekend photos with us, for those that follow a regular work week schedule and choose to do it that way. But the pictures can be taken at any time with any camera, including your cell phone. It's open to all skill levels from beginners to advanced. The images posted can be anything from casual snaps to extraordinary. I'll be sure to comment to each of your photos, if you choose to share. Replies from others are encouraged also.

The intent of this thread to mainly to just show photos in a relaxed way and to generate replies or comments about them. Generally I'm not planning to critique any image unless asked. But I or we may ask things about a photo that may develop into a discussion, always being friendly and helpful. It has been a request that I mention this and from what I've learned from past experience: Can you ask a member first if they would mind you editing their photos?

Remember it's all about the enjoyment of taking pictures regardless of what we have. We can learn from each. Please share any tips or techniques too. A narrative sometimes also helps. Thanks everyone for your participation.

    Subject: Rhododendron Flowers

On May 25th of this year I went back to Washington Park in Portland, Oregon the second time. Here's some more rhododendron flowers.

Photo No. 1 - We see rhododendron flowers mixed in with some other types. The window is short when we see these flowers in the spring. By now they must be all gone.

I wish our own Rhododendron still looked like those 😉
    Nice set again @Digirame

After our bike ride on saturday, we decided to go for a short hike on sunday.
Sunny moments again with friendly clouds and about 22c.

    Photobygms,

Thanks. That rhododendron wall is the only one I know that grows like that so tall. It must be because they keep that side open and exposed to the sunlight for the rose garden. That's my wild guess. 😀

    Photobygms,

Wow...that first photo is stunning. It's hard to make a bunch of leaves look good, but you certainly did that. You show the colorful leaves isolated with a pleasant background. I just love the blue sky and when you combined it with the flowers, that was super. It is nice to see your hiking/riding trails which look similar to what we have here in Oregon. Twenty-two degrees C sound perfect.

    Subject: Japanese Play

About 11 days ago I attended a Japanese play in downtown Portland, Oregon. At this performance they did not restrict photography. With the Canon RP I used a silent shutter and no flash.

I went to another play about a week later. At that one they did not allow photography, but because my camera was silent without any disturbing lights, they did not prohibit me from doing it. I hope you like a few of my indoor Japanese play performance photos. If your camera also has a silent shutter and you can take pictures without a flash at an indoor performance, you aught to give it a try. Please show them.

Subject: Old Car with the Old Olympus E500

Yesterday I was able to revive my old 8 megapixel Olympus E500 camera. Fortunately I also found the charger. The battery appeared to be good and it worked very well. It was frustrating at first remembering how to set the settings. But after some trial and error I was all set to go.

I thought it was neat that I could take a picture of an old car with this old camera and lens. With only 8 megapixels I had to be careful to not waste them, so minimal cropping would be necessary. I remembered to not exceed ISO500. The maximum ISO level is 1600, but there's too much noise at higher levels.

That camera was released almost 20 years ago. Although the image quality is not as good from this camera as more modern cameras, it taught me at least one thing. You can still get good pictures, but you have to work harder at it.

I challenge any of you to find an old camera like this and see what kind of pictures you can get from it. In doing so, I hope you have fun. 😀

We (Norma and I) went out for a bile ride today (25 miles with hills - thank goodness for electric) and came across this field of poppies. So, of course, I had to stop and take some piccies.

    Alan,

The red flowers are gorgeous. What a lovely day you all must have had with the electric bikes. It's nice to see the poppies with all of that blue sky.

    David,

I hope you have fun trying to take pictures with an old camera. The Olympus E-500 and E-510 cameras I had (and have) were my first DSLR cameras. I was a little amazed how poor the image quality was in dark shadows from some of my pictures I took yesterday. In brighter conditions, it wasn't too bad. It's not that the Olympus DSLR camera products were that bad in those days, it's just that we have advanced so much over 20 years. It made me realize how spoiled we have become with not only increased megapixels but with image quality, plus a host of other things too. For one, I could not clearly see my images in the Olympus E-500 LCD screen when chimping (because of reduced pixels in the screen). Some images I took were a little blurry (because of camera shake), but I could not detect them until later seeing them on the computer.

I had to learn how to effectively look for situations where I could use slower shutter speeds. Sometimes I had too much motion blur and I had some depth of field issues because I had to open the aperture more. I had to open the aperture more, because I could not use too high of ISO levels. From what I remember the Olympus E-510 was better than the Olympus E-500 in that regard, in that I could use up to ISO800 normally. Now with modern cameras, ISO levels from 12800 to 40000 are very nice in comparison. Any noise we get now, is certainly much better than what we had before. Anyway, that's my perspective. It will be interesting to see how you viewed it and your experience trying to get quality images from an old camera.

Oh, one more...I had to look and look for a compact flash reader to upload my Olympus E-500 pictures to the computer. I finally found one. I could have also transferred the images to the computer via a cable, but I could not find the correct cable for that either.

What I did like about the old camera, is that it started up right away. It's like time did not erode or damage it. It's a nice compact little DSLR camera . It reminded me why I liked it and why I took pictures with it for years. That's a lot different than when a person starts up an older car that has been sitting for 20 years. Old cars fall apart. Old cameras still can work like new. 😀

I hope you have fun with this challenge. 😀 I look forward to see what you (or anyone else) comes up with.

OK, I have located and fired up my Olympus D-510 Zoom (2MP) and Minolta A-1 (5MP). Both cameras still seem to work well (within their limitations!) I used them both extensively between 2002 and 2013, when I got a Canon 5D (which I gave away when I got the much better RP) and have lots of pictures on the computer from that period. I will look out some, and also go out and take new ones later today.

I actually have six NP400 batteries for the Minolta and use four of them to provide +/-15v for my microphone preamps when I am recording on location. I make sure to keep them charged. The Olympus uses four AA size batteries! I need to read the manuals to get the best out of these cameras (the Quick Start Guide for the Olympus says on the outside:

This is all you need to take great pictures!
