    The Weekly Landscape Thread

This weekly thread, starting on a Friday, allows us to showcase our Landscape photos and get some feedback.
Opening up discussions, not only on content, style, composition & techniques, but also on the emotion in the image, and of course about the place itself.

    It’s easy to participate

Post an image or short essay with a title and description. To make it easier to view in the forum, all comments should include the original title and at least one of the original images as a quote.

    Thread Guidelines:

    1. This thread is for sharing and developing our Landscape photography skills.
    2. Entries can be a single image or a short photo essay (2 to 10 connected images that tell a story).
    3. Give your entry a clear title and perhaps also explain why you took it, or the story it tells.
    4. Provide constructive feedback on others’ images/essays.
Try to go beyond simple praise or dismissal and explain why you like it, or what caught your eye.
      ”Likes” are encouraged too.
    5. Negative feedback and suggestions are also OK (be polite, honest, and constructive).

Giving feedback is just as important as receiving feedback, both help to improve our artistic and technical skills.

    What is a Landscape photo?

This means different things for different people. For me, it includes a wide range of photos taken outside,… from wide sweeping vistas to smaller details found along the route. Seascapes, landscapes, cityscapes, woodland shots, landscapes at night with some stars, and lots more are all OK. They could also include man-made objects and people or animals outside, but they are not usually the main subject. Show us, with your photos, what Landscape photography means to you.

    Motivation

I love to go hiking in the natural world and capture photos along the way. It keeps me fit (physically and mentally) and provides some beautiful memories. Processing those images when I return is fun too, it often helps to enhance what I saw.

    Downloading and reposting

It’s often challenging to verbalise comments about images. Instead, it’s sometimes easier to “show.” Unless the original poster specifically states otherwise (in each original post), participants are free to download, alter, and repost images in replies to express their analysis and critique. The reposted image may remain permanently or be removed after a short period. Downloaded and altered images shall not be used for any other purposes or uploaded elsewhere.

Enough said,… Go out, enjoy the open air, take some photos. Bring back the memories and post them here in the Weekly Landscape Thread 😊
...looking forward to seeing your images

On the way to Lake Laudachsee

I’m not showing a picture of the lake here; there is a phrase in German, “Der Weg ist das Ziel” which translates to “The journey is the goal” or “The path is the true destination”
Which sort of sums up a lot of my landscape photography, so here’s a set that were taken along the path to that lake.
...almost exactly 10 years ago today. It was springtime and the trees were covered in blossom. A wonderful hike!

Someone said here recently, that if you put a person in a photo, however small, they immediately become the subject. Well that’s fine for me in this photo 😊

    Approaching Storm

Glen Affric in the Scottish Highlands. I decided to underexpose to bring out the drama of the storm clouds and rays of light. Within a couple of minutes the hail was driving down, with no shelter to be had for miles. Fortunately it was short-lived.

    Another pear tree 😀
I wonder if you could lose some from the right hand side?

Nice sunburst here. I find the framing a bit uncomfortable. The top of the tree is included but close to the edge of the frame, while the left edge is cut off. You could try cropping to cut off some more of the twigs at the left and top (plus balance by maybe cropping right as well) or else go back again and include a wider view overall 😉. I can feel the chill!

A beautiful vista. I love the lines of hills rippling off into the distance and the patches of sunlight in the middle ground. The foreground trees with their colours just beginning to develop make the scene feel warm and enhance the sense of depth.

I didn't want to cut the left side off, but when I straightened it in LR, it chopped that bit out. This is the original JPG (just resized) - not the pylon in the distance.

The two hikers give this trail in the woods context. They also accentuate the smooth curved leading line of the trail. Nicely seen.

Alan, I don't see any reason to "straighten" the horizon since the horizon is not linear. Without doing that the image creates two points of tension - one at the side and one at the top.

    Hi Woodsider,
Yes, I thought the same when I looked at these images from exactly 10 years ago today, I would probably process different now. Not sure exactly why it was cropped like that originally. I can guess that there was something "in the way" more to the left and I didn't want to lose the rolling hills and nice fluffy clouds and put the tree right in the middle.
Normally, at least these days, I like to give some space in the direction that the object "is looking". It feels right to do that. Even if it is "only" a tree it can still have that space to look into and the image feels a bit less cramped.
Here is a crop, with a bit off the right, maybe it works better than the original?

    dprevived.com/media/attachments/b9/ac/YH1L8BfRkFq71UVcKLrrD3SwMNrS5vSgXp4h0DMm890VSTnygRFX8FjyMUAE4nw8/dsc-2852-d-2025-.jpg

The sun will be shining tomorrow, maybe the blossum will be there too, so we will probbaly go back to this place again for a nostaligic "10 years later" revisit.
The quality of the camera is better these days, but the question is have I improved too? ;-)

The sunstar in the second is good. I see you used the old trick of closing the lens down and putting the sun half behind a branch. Works well and looks good :-)
Woodsider already mentioned the crop, maybe a more radical crop would bring out the beauty of sun star even more?

    That springtime blossum is beautiful!
    So many different shades.
I think I like the last one best in this set.

That is wonderful scene. Love the way the sunlight is picking out that meadow in the middle.
The contrast, saturation, brighness and the warmth are all increased by the sun in that area.
When my daughter sees something like this, she'll say in a deep voice "God bless this land, especially that bit over there!" :-)

Its especially impressive when the sun shines through a hole in the dark cloud cover. Well caught!

Interesting formations! The image, or perhaps just the sky, feels a bit dark to me, although I think the sun was shining ?

Strangely, making the sky brighter didn't seem to help much, but if I make the sky is even darker it starts to work better for me.

The Turkish flag certainly shows where we are here. It's nicely placed in the image.
...after seeing the photo of the Approaching storm from Woodsider this week, it almost looks here, like your speeding away from such a storm ;-)

The curse of the American West in the summer. There were some massive wildland fires to the West that turned the sky a smokey gray blue. There were some clouds - but they were not obvious.
