    The Weekly Landscape Thread

This weekly thread, starting on a Friday, allows us to showcase our Landscape photos and get some feedback.
Opening up discussions, not only on content, style, composition & techniques, but also on the emotion in the image, and of course about the place itself.

    It’s easy to participate

Post an image or short essay with a title and description. To make it easier to view in the forum, all comments should include the original title and at least one of the original images as a quote.

    Thread Guidelines:

    1. This thread is for sharing and developing our Landscape photography skills.
    2. Entries can be a single image or a short photo essay (2 to 10 connected images that tell a story).
    3. Give your entry a clear title and perhaps also explain why you took it, or the story it tells.
    4. Provide constructive feedback on others’ images/essays.
Try to go beyond simple praise or dismissal and explain why you like it, or what caught your eye.
      ”Likes” are encouraged too.
    5. Negative feedback and suggestions are also OK (be polite, honest, and constructive).

Giving feedback is just as important as receiving feedback, both help to improve our artistic and technical skills.

    What is a Landscape photo?

This means different things for different people. For me, it includes a wide range of photos taken outside,… from wide sweeping vistas to smaller details found along the route. Seascapes, landscapes, cityscapes, woodland shots, landscapes at night with some stars, and lots more are all OK. They could also include man-made objects and people or animals outside, but they are not usually the main subject. Show us, with your photos, what Landscape photography means to you.

    Motivation

I love to go hiking in the natural world and capture photos along the way. It keeps me fit (physically and mentally) and provides some beautiful memories. Processing those images when I return is fun too, it often helps to enhance what I saw.

    Downloading and reposting

It’s often challenging to verbalise comments about images. Instead, it’s sometimes easier to “show.” Unless the original poster specifically states otherwise (in each original post), participants are free to download, alter, and repost images in replies to express their analysis and critique. The reposted image may remain permanently or be removed after a short period. Downloaded and altered images shall not be used for any other purposes or uploaded elsewhere.

Enough said,… Go out, enjoy the open air, take some photos. Bring back the memories and post them here in the Weekly Landscape Thread 😊

...looking forward to seeing your images,...
…especially now that new high quality thumbnails have gone live this week on DPRevived.
Your great images will now look good in the thread, even without clicking on them to see the full resolution :-)

Landmannalaugar, just perfect for adventurous landscape photographers!

With a Toyota Land Cruiser, it was easy enough to drive through the rivers on the famous Icelandic gravel roads to get to Landmannalaugar.

Here, a fairly small crossing with my wife at the wheel.
Fun, but always a bit nerve racking, since you never know how deep the river really is in the middle, and that depth can also change over time too.

When we arrived at this river, there were 3 cars waiting , trying the decide to cross it, or not.
After a while two of them turned back and never made it to Landmannalaugar.
Then the driver in the blue car decided Landmannalaugar was definitely worth the risk, and he made it!!
Well, after seeing that, we just followed too, of course 😊

I particular like these two. On the first the composition with the windmills and time of day just work.
The sun starts in the second stand out.

    End of the day

Sunset over the Worm's Head, Gower. This iconic location used to be a regular haunt when we lived down south (my husband had family connections on Gower), but now it's a rare treat to head back there - out of season!
This was taken using exposure bracketing and HDR blending in Lr.

Wonderful shots of a wonderful landscape.

This is somewhere I'd love to visit! But like so many places, increased popularity has led to over-exposure (not of the photographic sort!), and I hesitate to add to the problem. Was this recently, and did you encounter lots of other tourists?

The field of buttercups might offer opportunities for a more creative framing by getting down low with a narrow DoF. I've had some success with including some of the flowers very close to the lens to give just a vague haze of colour and/or shape at the bottom of the image, and picking out a few sharply focused flowers in the middle ground.

The sun shots have a nice warm feel. Very summery.

Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park in Utah. For scale, that's a human on the upper right of the tallest dune. You rent boogie boards to slide down them or ATVs to ride through them. It's a bit of a Wild West type park.

I was already head down leaning over a wall looking at the LCD to try and frame it 😁. But I take your point and will try to do better next time.

Looks like a great evening for a walk. I especially like these ones

windmills are often critisized as being ugly in the landscape, but in some settings they look elegant and add an area of interest in the background.
They look good here! Reminds us that it is possible to achieve the the renewable energy goals.

It's a good tactic to place someone in the image, near the edge, enjoying the view. It sort of tells the viewer to do the same ;-)

The colours and lighting are good here; the rim lighting especially :-)
I tried a crop on the left side, about a quarter of the image, It keeps the best of the warm bright light on the water, and removes most of the left most diagonal twig.
The right hand side is nice and dark and makes the brighter parts appear to shine out even more.

I thought these glass balls always turn the image upside down. Did this get a helping hand from photoshop?
    Nice image in any case.
On an aside,... In our company, in the big canteen, I started a exhibition of photos many years ago. There's 6 large photos behind anti reflective glass, all lit with spotlights. I've changed out the photos every 3-4 months to keep it fresh and interesting.
Also got younger photographers interested to contribute too.
At the moment there's a display of 6 Glass ball images similar to yours made by a young lady. They look good and are getting some good feedback :-)

That's one of the better silky water photos I've seen :-)
The movement is blurred enough to get the silky effect but also see some structure in the water too.
The wet black rocks really shine out and glisten. The composition is good too with the vertically cascading waterfall and a diagonal flow line starting in the middle and zig-zagging down to the bottom.

    Trevor,

    Thanks for the feedback.

Yes, the glass ball had some 'manipulation' to turn it around. Was fun to work out how to do it - then I asked someone and there was a much easier way...

I didn't even know she was there until I turned up the mid range !! But, you are right, it added to the image.

I tried something similar, but I preferred the wider view.

Anything fits in the "Through your eyes" thread - that's the beauty of it. Participants are exposed to genres they don't necessarily do themselves; broadens the horizons 😀

That beautiful view brings back memories!
I think I mentioned some time ago that, as a student, I used to go hangliding on the ridge along Rhossili beach, just to the right of worm's head.
Your picture has some lovely warm light here, with those god rays shining out.
Like the way the seaguls seem to be flying around the sun.
And the diagonal composition with the foreground rocks leading right to the sun in a thirds "power" point is good :-)
