The Weekly Landscape Thread

This new weekly thread, starting on a Friday, allows us to showcase our Landscape photos and get some feedback.
Opening up discussions, not only on content, style, composition & techniques, but also on the emotion in the image, and of course about the place itself.

It’s easy to participate

Post an image or short essay with a title and description. To make it easier to view in the forum, all comments should include the original title and at least one of the original images as a quote.

Thread Guidelines:

1. This thread is for sharing and developing our Landscape photography skills.
2. Entries can be a single image or a short photo essay (2 to 10 connected images that tell a story).
3. Give your entry a clear title and perhaps also explain why you took it, or the story it tells.
4. Provide constructive feedback on others’ images/essays.
   Try to go beyond simple praise or dismissal and explain why you like it, or what caught your eye.
   ”Likes” are encouraged too.
5. Negative feedback and suggestions are also OK (be polite, honest, and constructive).
6. Stay on topic

Giving feedback is just as important as receiving feedback, both help to improve our artistic and technical skills.

What is a Landscape photo?

This means different things for different people. For me, it includes a wide range of photos taken outside,… from wide sweeping vistas to smaller details found along the route. Seascapes, landscapes, cityscapes, woodland shots, landscapes at night with some stars, and lots more are all OK. They could also include man-made objects and people or animals outside, but they are not usually the main subject. Show us, with your photos, what Landscape photography means to you.

Motivation

I love to go hiking outdoors in the natural world and capture photos along the way. It keeps me fit (physically and mentally) and provides some beautiful memories. Processing those images when I return is fun too, it often helps to enhance what I saw.

Downloading and reposting

It’s often challenging to verbalise comments about images. Instead, it’s sometimes easier to “show.” Unless the original poster specifically states otherwise (in each original post), participants are free to download, alter, and repost images in replies to express their analysis and critique. The reposted image may remain permanently or be removed after a short period. Downloaded and altered images shall not be used for any other purposes or uploaded elsewhere.

Happy Valentine's Day

Since today is Valentine’s Day, I thought I’d start this week off with an old favourite photo.
It’s the heart shaped road called the “Herzerlstrasse” in Slovenia as it’s seen from just over the border in Styria, Austria.
Some say there is in fact a real love story behind the way this road connecting two farm houses came to be built.
Anyway, there’s some great scenery and great wines in this area :-)

Sunrise Over the Badlands

Those red rocks are amazing! Lovely texture and the little green plants provide a nice contrast
We have an area here that we call the "red rock river", but it pales in comparison to these red rocks.
If you look at the image on a big screen in full res you can see that you're pretty high up looking down into the abyss. I get told off from my wife I do that, but the shots you get do look impressive, when you're close to the edge ;-)

Yes, definitely more colours than the last image but it's clear that it is still winter here; cold and misty.
The reflections are nice.
Spring will be here soon and fill this area full with wild flowers.

The rain comes rolling in

I had to look up to see where La Gomera is :-)
I was once on an island 500km north of this one.
La Gomera looks like a nice place. The path here gives the image a lot of depth, and the hazy hills in the background add to that depth.
You’ve shown us where the hike is headed, at least part of it. I wonder how far is still to go?The path with its slight “S” curve is well lit and framed by the darker trees to the left and right that are making some nice shadows

The fine detail and texture in the image appear when viewed at full res. Both the jagged peaks here on the right and the path leading through the midground formations are interesting. It looks like a place with countless opportunities for photography !
I like the way the band of clouds at the top frames the picture and adds in some light to balance the image

Another one of my favorite places, Big Bend National Park. We often go the week after Christmas. It is a huge park, never crowded, and has an amazing variety of landscapes from desert to mountain to canyon. We got caught in a snowstorm one year and were stuck at the lodge (south Texas doesn't have much snow removal equipment), and explored some of the mountain areas on foot.

This is pretty cool!.
I like the way the line of dark rocks comes from the bottom of the image and has a curve that arches up and around into the middle of the image. It meets a similar curved line of the foreboding clouds coming down from the top towards the middle. Then there is yet another curve of the white wave coming from the left.
The clouds are bringing the winds that will power up that offshore windfarm in the distance.
Quality and sharpness are good here from the foreground all the way to the background

This is a great image. Full of contrasts. The blue/white snow is contrasted with that warm mountain range in the sunset light. The thin band of cloud hanging in the peaks straight ahead is soft and fluffy while the diagonal line of foreground plants are spikey.

Believe me, this little black duck is terrified of heights and I was in no danger at all when I took the shot. The same little black duck is also very aware of cliff undercutting.
The red is real. All the rock there is full of iron.

Fairy Chimneys, Cappadoccia, Turkey.

A little detail. This was taken in Badlands National Park - nearest town is Wall, South Dakota. The peaks are not rock, but peaks of Bentonite clay. The formations are from wind (lots of wind) and water erosion. In the badlands you will find big horn sheep, bison, ferrets, and all other sorts of wild life. The evening before this image we had a horrendous. The temp when the storm hit was 106. We got there sun rise and it was cool and stayed cool the remainder of the tree days we were there. The clouds were clearing. The light was gorgeous. I learned something important the first 5 minutes. When Bentonite clay gets wet, it is slicker than snail snot. I thought about walking out and did for a ways until I went head over heels and ended up making mud pies. 😂 But the morning light was to die for. Every scene in the badlands is different.

A buddy and loaded our horses and headed to Big Bend for a week one February many moons ago. It was one of the most unique places on the face of the earth. It is also an international dark sky destination. When there is no moon, it is pitch black and night and one understands the Carl Sagan comment about billions and billions of stars because you can see them. A full moon is so bright, it cast shadows.
