    The Weekly Landscape Thread

This weekly thread, starting on a Friday, allows us to showcase our Landscape photos and get some feedback.
Opening up discussions, not only on content, style, composition & techniques, but also on the emotion in the image, and of course about the place itself.

    It’s easy to participate

Post an image or short essay with a title and description. To make it easier to view in the forum, all comments should include the original title and at least one of the original images as a quote.

    Thread Guidelines:

    1. This thread is for sharing and developing our Landscape photography skills.
    2. Entries can be a single image or a short photo essay (2 to 10 connected images that tell a story).
    3. Give your entry a clear title and perhaps also explain why you took it, or the story it tells.
    4. Provide constructive feedback on others’ images/essays.
Try to go beyond simple praise or dismissal and explain why you like it, or what caught your eye.
      ”Likes” are encouraged too.
    5. Negative feedback and suggestions are also OK (be polite, honest, and constructive).

Giving feedback is just as important as receiving feedback, both help to improve our artistic and technical skills.

    What is a Landscape photo?

This means different things for different people. For me, it includes a wide range of photos taken outside,… from wide sweeping vistas to smaller details found along the route. Seascapes, landscapes, cityscapes, woodland shots, landscapes at night with some stars, and lots more are all OK. They could also include man-made objects and people or animals outside, but they are not usually the main subject. Show us, with your photos, what Landscape photography means to you.

    Motivation

I love to go hiking in the natural world and capture photos along the way. It keeps me fit (physically and mentally) and provides some beautiful memories. Processing those images when I return is fun too, it often helps to enhance what I saw.

    Downloading and reposting

It’s often challenging to verbalise comments about images. Instead, it’s sometimes easier to “show.” Unless the original poster specifically states otherwise (in each original post), participants are free to download, alter, and repost images in replies to express their analysis and critique. The reposted image may remain permanently or be removed after a short period. Downloaded and altered images shall not be used for any other purposes or uploaded elsewhere.

Enough said,… Go out, enjoy the open air, take some photos. Bring back the memories and post them here in the Weekly Landscape Thread 😊

...looking forward to seeing your images,

Hi I'm on holiday in Slovenia this week so not much time to participate
Here are 3 first shots from a Gorge.
Sent here via WhatsApp. So the quality is not so good until I get back home.

    Thanks for posting.
I think waterfalls make a great subject for B&W. The white water makes sure the contrast is nice and high.
Here you can follow the flow with a nice diagonal line across the image and the texture of the rocks is well shown :-)

Picasso comes to mind when I look at this one. With the very wide angle lens it's full of perspective distortions, the symmetry of the bridge has been removed, the wall is no longer vertical or straight and we are looking down and around at the same time. A free spirit with patches of nice colour too ;-)

This is a bit brain bending! I had to google to reassure myself that it isn't really asymmetrical! But it makes for an interesting perspective with the tilted foreground too.

    Three Cliffs

    P2166058.jpg

I've been away last week in Gower, but I was down there for a social event and didn't do any photography. But 'here's one I made earlier' at Three Cliffs Bay, often voted among the best beaches in Britain/Europe/World. It was a rare occasion when I experimented with taking - and using - a tripod. I wondered if it would actually make any difference. I haven't bothered since, which I guess tells you the answer. I prefer the spontaneity of hand-held, not to mention the extra freedom from added weight.

Normally I'm not a fan of UWA perspective distortion. However, in this shot the juxtaposition of the elements, flowers, wall, bridge arch, etc., such projective distortion provides a pleasing abstract. Nicely seen.

I've just returned back from holiday in Slovenia, so finally time enough to make some comments.
This is a great shot, must have been a good tripod ;-)

The big stones are nice and bright, sitting there in the sunshine but the big dark cloud above says that could change soon.
Lots of depth and feels wide open, despite it being in portrait orientation.
Lovely light-yellow sand and silvery shining water ahead too. The cliffs make for a nice frame here in the image.
At the first glance on my phone screen I thought the big stone on the left was a big seal :-)

Actually no, just a cheap travel tripod.

Ha ha! I took it for a dead sheep 😂

Tonight I went out with the camera club to Tandle Hill in Oldham. It's a great big park with hills and trees.

The light wasn't brilliant (overcast with occasional rain), but I managed to pick out a few shots that I thought might be worth a comment or two.

Looking through the trees - that one at the back was amazing and I like how the other two trees framed it.

These next two were a view over towards Manchester. The second one is just a crop of the first.

These next two are also a view over towards Manchester, but through a glass ball that someone had brought along.

I had the same experience as you, I hardly ever use a tripod (anymore) the stabilisation on most modern cameras has improved so much that it is now possible to get sharp pictures hand held. And without the tripod you win so much more freedom to try out different angles and viewpoints. I think the old adage that a tripod slows you down, and therefore your pictures are much better composed, is totally overated.
Of course, in some situations you'll need a tripod, but in most situations it's no longer needed.

    😂

    This is good!!
Lots of detail and contrast and nice patterns.
The layers of the hills are nice, you get to feel the 3D structure of the landscape, and the haze in the distance helps to give that feeling of increased depth.
The curvy road takes your eye right into that depth.
Maybe I would have cropped a bit of the sky off to make it a bit more panaramic, and also makes the image a bit "larger on the screen"; showing off more of the nice detail in the foreground.

It's nice to have the opportunity to do a camera club walk.
Must be good time to swap ideas and compare results, It's like the "real live version" of our "online club" that we have here at "The Photo"
Looks like you got some worthwhile shots from that trip

Really like this one. The contrast of the two brighter straight trees framing that one big darker tree in the middle with all those curvy branches is great.

This is similar to the one above but doesn't have that strong compositional element like the first one does.

Manchester seems to be situated quite nicely with all that green around the big city
The people on the edge of the ball make this interesting!
