    The Weekly Landscape Thread

...starting the weekly thread a few hours earlier since I'm off taking some photos tomorrow :-)

This weekly thread, starting on a Friday, allows us to showcase our Landscape photos and get some feedback.
Opening up discussions, not only on content, style, composition & techniques, but also on the emotion in the image, and of course about the place itself.

    It’s easy to participate

Post an image or short essay with a title and description. To make it easier to view in the forum, all comments should include the original title and at least one of the original images as a quote.

    Thread Guidelines:

    1. This thread is for sharing and developing our Landscape photography skills.
    2. Entries can be a single image or a short photo essay (2 to 10 connected images that tell a story).
    3. Give your entry a clear title and perhaps also explain why you took it, or the story it tells.
    4. Provide constructive feedback on others’ images/essays.
Try to go beyond simple praise or dismissal and explain why you like it, or what caught your eye.
      ”Likes” are encouraged too.
    5. Negative feedback and suggestions are also OK (be polite, honest, and constructive).

Giving feedback is just as important as receiving feedback, both help to improve our artistic and technical skills.

    What is a Landscape photo?

This means different things for different people. For me, it includes a wide range of photos taken outside,… from wide sweeping vistas to smaller details found along the route. Seascapes, landscapes, cityscapes, woodland shots, landscapes at night with some stars, and lots more are all OK. They could also include man-made objects and people or animals outside, but they are not usually the main subject. Show us, with your photos, what Landscape photography means to you.

    Motivation

I love to go hiking in the natural world and capture photos along the way. It keeps me fit (physically and mentally) and provides some beautiful memories. Processing those images when I return is fun too, it often helps to enhance what I saw.

    Downloading and reposting

It’s often challenging to verbalise comments about images. Instead, it’s sometimes easier to “show.” Unless the original poster specifically states otherwise (in each original post), participants are free to download, alter, and repost images in replies to express their analysis and critique. The reposted image may remain permanently or be removed after a short period. Downloaded and altered images shall not be used for any other purposes or uploaded elsewhere.

Enough said,… Go out, enjoy the open air, take some photos. Bring back the memories and post them here in the Weekly Landscape Thread 😊

...looking forward to seeing your images,

The island of Capri and a few boats

Many people say that visiting Capri is like fulfilling a lifetime’s dream. This was my second visit. It certainly is a beautiful place.
    Here‘s a few boats ,…

Not my idea of a dream destination 😉

That villa... All it takes is money... and knowing Italy, knowing the right people.

The last is a nice take.

    Lofoten

Taken from hill near Lofoten's "capital" Svolvaer. It was about 200 meters in ascent, technically easy because there were sherpa stairs built, but it still was quite demanding physically. In addition I am out of shape and having messenger bag instead of backpack for camera and lenses made ascent not easier. But top I reached...

Yes indeed, Norway has some great scenery to offer photographers, especially on the Lofoten Islands.
There's lots of detail in this image to discover, in and around the harbours, and the background has some lovely mountains as they receed into the distance. The clouds look impressive too. I guess that's why you chose to put the horizon in the middle of the image to show both?
I would have probably cropped some of the sky away to raise the horizon and make the image have something like a 16 x 9 format. Would then seem to be more panoramic, but that is just a personal taste.
It was quite an overcast day so the light was a bit flat, it would also be possible of course to brighten it up somewhat and add some contrast, but it would change the character of the image and might make it look a bit "unnatural" compared to what you really saw

    Sunrise on the Loire

Going with the boat theme that seems to be developing this week, here are a couple of river craft on the Loire in central France. They seem to be used by fishermen and also farmers getting over to the islands in the river to check on their livestock there. I think they punt them mostly, in summer anyway when the river is low.

    Good to have a theme!
I really like the way that the sunset shines our against the darker areas of the image and makes a transition from yellow/orange to dark blue.
The light blue reflection of the clouds in the water, and the warm light
on the grass in the foreground, looks good too.
    Nicely composed!

This is my favorite, gives good overview of ship size, great background also.
Other photos get me dizzy, not fan of height :P

Yes, I got plenty of detail, as I shot most of photos there with HHHR mode and got 50 MPix to work with...
Regarding horizon there was not much below image apart from small birches so there was no reason to point camera more downward and that defined centered horizon. I agree that cropping bit from top and getting rid of center horizon might improve image here. I probably go with 3:2 and maybe make big print out of it.
It was late evening, about 1 hour before sun set and sun was behind mountain, so light was indeed quite flat already and scene darker than it would be during daylight. It could benefit from bit more brightness, though.

    ,
This shot looks to me a bit like a scene from a Sci-Fi movie, somehow unreal and alien. But I've never visited the badlands ;-)

Which is the very reason we keep returning - the unique forms left wind and water erosion . This time of the year it is normally bone dry and 100 plus degrees F there. This year has been atypically wet and cool in the US Northern planes. That's the reason for the delicate cloud cover - not much is "delicate" there. However, the wet meant grass everywhere - not just on the plateau. So the sheep were scattered and we only spotted one in the distance.

Here's an edit to make it look a bit brighter, and try and remove some of the "flat lighting" look.
It is, of course, just one of a thousand possible edits, and may look quite different to how it really looked like, when you were there :-)

The layers of colours are good here.
Making the foreground a silhouette works well and seems to make the sky appear brighter and more impressive

We got to the badlands before dawn at a point that the sunrise is incredible. We've seen bighorn rams pass through at sunrise. The Norther plains were wet this summer and the badlands were very lush and the sheep were scattered. A low layer of clouds hung over and sunrise a bust. We went to another spot that has good morning light. The clouds were hanging. We parked and my wife got out and with the flat light I stayed in the truck. When my wife came back I had dosed off - and wake up to this most incredible light. High clouds parting but still leaving a hint of texture in the sky and the directional morning sun showing up like a spot light.
