    The Weekly Landscape Thread

This weekly thread, starting on a Friday, allows us to showcase our Landscape photos and get some feedback.
Opening up discussions, not only on content, style, composition & techniques, but also on the emotion in the image, and of course about the place itself.

    It’s easy to participate

Post an image or short essay with a title and description. To make it easier to view in the forum, all comments should include the original title and at least one of the original images as a quote.

    Thread Guidelines:

    1. This thread is for sharing and developing our Landscape photography skills.
    2. Entries can be a single image or a short photo essay (2 to 10 connected images that tell a story).
    3. Give your entry a clear title and perhaps also explain why you took it, or the story it tells.
    4. Provide constructive feedback on others’ images/essays.
Try to go beyond simple praise or dismissal and explain why you like it, or what caught your eye.
      ”Likes” are encouraged too.
    5. Negative feedback and suggestions are also OK (be polite, honest, and constructive).

Giving feedback is just as important as receiving feedback, both help to improve our artistic and technical skills.

    What is a Landscape photo?

This means different things for different people. For me, it includes a wide range of photos taken outside,… from wide sweeping vistas to smaller details found along the route. Seascapes, landscapes, cityscapes, woodland shots, landscapes at night with some stars, and lots more are all OK. They could also include man-made objects and people or animals outside, but they are not usually the main subject. Show us, with your photos, what Landscape photography means to you.

    Motivation

I love to go hiking in the natural world and capture photos along the way. It keeps me fit (physically and mentally) and provides some beautiful memories. Processing those images when I return is fun too, it often helps to enhance what I saw.

    Downloading and reposting

It’s often challenging to verbalise comments about images. Instead, it’s sometimes easier to “show.” Unless the original poster specifically states otherwise (in each original post), participants are free to download, alter, and repost images in replies to express their analysis and critique. The reposted image may remain permanently or be removed after a short period. Downloaded and altered images shall not be used for any other purposes or uploaded elsewhere.

Enough said,… Go out, enjoy the open air, take some photos. Bring back the memories and post them here in the Weekly Landscape Thread 😊

...looking forward to seeing your images,

    Hvitserkur

This week in Austria, it’s been foggy, cold, damp and trips outside were not looking at all inviting.
So, here’s three from the vault,…
Back in 2018 we visited the natural rocky formation at Hvitserkur in Iceland.
Driving around independently has the advantage that almost no one is around at some of the destinations :-)

I guess you all know that this formation was actually a Troll that was turned to stone, a long time ago, when the light came up earlier than he expected.
He was on the way across the mudflats to destroy the annoying bells at the Þingeyrar monastry. But alas,…

Detailed and sharp all the way into the corners.
From your chosen viewpoint the rocky cliffs are nicely framing that tower in the middle.
I like those fluffy bright white clouds :-)

Nice Alpine series with lovely bright colours.
In the first, I might have cropped a bit off the left and the top, to hide the sort of empty branches on the left, but that's only a personal preference:-)

Looks like a friendly cow ;-)

Interesting how the 'tentacles' reach up to touch the reflection.

    Not Tuscany

... but Greece. Looking down to the coast of the Gulf of Corinth from Delfi.

I like the way the roads look like dried up river beds flowing through this land.
And look at all those olive trees! Almost as if the mountain is wearing a woolly jumper.
Lots of detail all over the shot, and the few tall cypress trees are nice highlights in among that soft carpet.

Needs to be viewed big to appreciate the texture in the image better.

I have been going back and reprocessing some of my favourite older digital photos with modern software. This is Maslin Beach, Blanche Point and Gull Rock in the Southern Suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia. This point only gets sunlight on it a couple of weeks every year either side of the winter solstice. I took this photo in 2009 with my first digital SLR. It won a colour print competition at my camera club at the time. Maslin beach is quite long and this southern end is an officially designated nude beach.

That's a lovely scenic cliffside. You definitely captured some great light here!
The sky is wonderful with all those colours.
Congrats for a worthy winner at the camera club!
The procssing looks good here, what were the advantages that you noticed with the modern software for this image?

Thanks. First of all, this was taken with a 6MP Pentax *istD. I changed the metadata to K10D to be able to process the file in DxO Photolab. As far as advantages using modern software goes, with Photolab, the demosaicing and lens corrections are far superior and you can start with a much sharper image. Colour is way more natural, especially in the sky and the light reflection on the water is much better. Also with much easier masking these days it's simpler to bring out more detail on the headland with some judicious use of Texture.

When I get a chance, I'm going to enlarge this with Topaz Gigapixel and try an A2 print.

Mt. Rainier from the ferry (Talequah to Point Defiance). Not much in terms of creativity (the mountain is in the middle of the frame). More like historical documentation. An overcast day with flat light. I didn't want to juice things too much and alter reality! The mountain is 50 miles away (80 km).

Maslin Beach, Blanche Point and Gull Rock... beautiful. And the waves are perfect.
