    The Weekly Landscape Thread

This weekly thread, starting on a Friday, allows us to showcase our Landscape photos and get some feedback.
Opening up discussions, not only on content, style, composition & techniques, but also on the emotion in the image, and of course about the place itself.

    It’s easy to participate

Post an image or short essay with a title and description. To make it easier to view in the forum, all comments should include the original title and at least one of the original images as a quote.

    Thread Guidelines:

    1. This thread is for sharing and developing our Landscape photography skills.
    2. Entries can be a single image or a short photo essay (2 to 10 connected images that tell a story).
    3. Give your entry a clear title and perhaps also explain why you took it, or the story it tells.
    4. Provide constructive feedback on others’ images/essays.
Try to go beyond simple praise or dismissal and explain why you like it, or what caught your eye.
      ”Likes” are encouraged too.
    5. Negative feedback and suggestions are also OK (be polite, honest, and constructive).

Giving feedback is just as important as receiving feedback, both help to improve our artistic and technical skills.

    What is a Landscape photo?

This means different things for different people. For me, it includes a wide range of photos taken outside,… from wide sweeping vistas to smaller details found along the route. Seascapes, landscapes, cityscapes, woodland shots, landscapes at night with some stars, and lots more are all OK. They could also include man-made objects and people or animals outside, but they are not usually the main subject. Show us, with your photos, what Landscape photography means to you.

    Motivation

I love to go hiking in the natural world and capture photos along the way. It keeps me fit (physically and mentally) and provides some beautiful memories. Processing those images when I return is fun too, it often helps to enhance what I saw.

    Downloading and reposting

It’s often challenging to verbalise comments about images. Instead, it’s sometimes easier to “show.” Unless the original poster specifically states otherwise (in each original post), participants are free to download, alter, and repost images in replies to express their analysis and critique. The reposted image may remain permanently or be removed after a short period. Downloaded and altered images shall not be used for any other purposes or uploaded elsewhere.

Enough said,… Go out, enjoy the open air, take some photos. Bring back the memories and post them here in the Weekly Landscape Thread 😊

...looking forward to seeing your images,

Where two rivers meet and flow as one

The river on the left runs a little bit faster and the slope of the river bed is a bit steeper.
So, further back in the image the left river is actually a bit higher than the right river.
I found this a bit odd when I first saw it, but now find it quite normal ;-)

Where two rivers meet and flow as one

That is a very pleasant scene! I can feel it. The fresh air and the frost. Don't slip and fall into the water! Morning or afternoon? For landscape shots, I am always interested in location (and I like looking at maps). Was this taken recently or something from your archives?

    A couple of supplemental questions...

1.) the basic settings are evident below the image (i.e., camera model/make, ISO, focal length, SS, aperture) -- is there a way to see the EXIF/dates?
2.) When I posted in the previous thread, I used a Flickr link (which initiated a Flickr pop-up) -- but I prefer the "embedded" display. How can I do that?

THANKS for any info/guidance you can provide!

    Thanks cpm :-)
I haven't found a way to see the "taken on " date maybe someone else knows?

This was a shot taken from my archives on about the same day of the year as today, but back in 2020.
I usually add the place, but not this time for some reason.
It's near the town of Attnang Puchheim in Austria, close to where I live.

It's easy to add photos and display the embedded thumbnail image, as I did, ...here's a link.

Cool. I think I've never seen a place where rivers flow together. Or I have just forgotten. Smaller rivers running into a larger one, yes. But these two seem equal in size. Nice image and nice to see.

A browser plugin. I like Exify.
    www.exify.io/

It gives you an overlay with what there is room for at the bottom of the image when you hold the mouse pointer over it (not the date in this case). When you click the little icon that's also overlayed you get the whole shebang. Well, most of it anyway.

A very nice place. Those small areas with frost give a special touch to the image...

    From the bridge.
It is the same river, the Arga, as it passes through the city of Pamplona, taken from different bridges...

Oops. I thought I could delete the "test" post, but I'm not seeing an option to do so. If there is a way to delete a post, please let me know.

    SHASTA DAM / SHASTA LAKE

Here is an offering for this week's #41 thread. Taken on 15 November. The "preface" that Fireplace has written to start-off the thread is very positive and encouraging. In regard to "What is a Landscape photo?" -- in this case, the man-made object is indeed the subject of the photo... but it is the only fresh "landscape" picture I have at the moment... so hopefully this will be fine. On second thought, I will supplement pic #1 with a pano (pic #2) "looking the other way" (behind the dam) which more or less conforms with the "short photo essay (2 to 10 connected images that tell a story" guidance. Going forward, I will try to focus on the "landscape" intent. I realize I need to develop a better eye for framing/comp. Sometimes, it is so wonderful being outside, you just want to "get it all in" but I really need to "see" things a little better and get more creative. This was the only photo stop I made on a 2-day drive directly from San Diego to Seattle.

I'm noticing that the pictures I've posted look a little flat (color/contrast). I'm a bit reluctant to overcook things... trying to maintain some semblance of reality. The images you guys have posted seem to have a bit more "pop" with more pleasing colors and vibrancy. I'll work on it! :-)

I really like #2 - just the right fell to it. The river, trees and sky. Nice color and contrast.

You may always write PM to me or AlanSh.
You can also edit the post itself, noting there that you want to delete it. We may help then.

What about your current TEST post - it is kinda nice image, I don't delete it befor you explicitly request that :)

PS. While quoting, pay attention to not remove quote block closing tag - [/quote] :) I fixed some of these here.

Seems we have a "water theme" this week.

    Alpine autumn

Continuing the watery theme, if not actually a flowing river 😁
High above the Claree valley in the French Alps - about 2500m altitude here I think. Taken a couple of years ago.
The delicate colours and textures of grasses always catch my eye. In this case, the hints of turquoise in the pool make a perfect complement.

We are sometimes told (those 'rules' of composition) that diverging focal points like this are a no-no, but I think this works rather well. Reminds me of the poem 'The road not taken', or maybe in this case, not paddled 😁 The patches of frost make nice highlights (yes, the poem is by Robert Frost too 😁)
