    The Weekly Landscape Thread

This weekly thread, starting on a Friday, allows us to showcase our Landscape photos and get some feedback.
Opening up discussions, not only on content, style, composition & techniques, but also on the emotion in the image, and of course about the place itself.

    It’s easy to participate

Post an image or short essay with a title and description. To make it easier to view in the forum, all comments should include the original title and at least one of the original images as a quote.

    Thread Guidelines:

    1. This thread is for sharing and developing our Landscape photography skills.
    2. Entries can be a single image or a short photo essay (2 to 10 connected images that tell a story).
    3. Give your entry a clear title and perhaps also explain why you took it, or the story it tells.
    4. Provide constructive feedback on others’ images/essays.
Try to go beyond simple praise or dismissal and explain why you like it, or what caught your eye.
      ”Likes” are encouraged too.
    5. Negative feedback and suggestions are also OK (be polite, honest, and constructive).

Giving feedback is just as important as receiving feedback, both help to improve our artistic and technical skills.

    What is a Landscape photo?

This means different things for different people. For me, it includes a wide range of photos taken outside,… from wide sweeping vistas to smaller details found along the route. Seascapes, landscapes, cityscapes, woodland shots, landscapes at night with some stars, and lots more are all OK. They could also include man-made objects and people or animals outside, but they are not usually the main subject. Show us, with your photos, what Landscape photography means to you.

    Motivation

I love to go hiking in the natural world and capture photos along the way. It keeps me fit (physically and mentally) and provides some beautiful memories. Processing those images when I return is fun too, it often helps to enhance what I saw.

    Downloading and reposting

It’s often challenging to verbalise comments about images. Instead, it’s sometimes easier to “show.” Unless the original poster specifically states otherwise (in each original post), participants are free to download, alter, and repost images in replies to express their analysis and critique. The reposted image may remain permanently or be removed after a short period. Downloaded and altered images shall not be used for any other purposes or uploaded elsewhere.

Enough said,… Go out, enjoy the open air, take some photos. Bring back the memories and post them here in the Weekly Landscape Thread 😊

...looking forward to seeing your images,

    A “Gams” at Stegmooslam

I’ve been for walks to the top of Stegmoosalm, Austria many times in the past, but last weekend was first time that I met a “Gams” up there .
He was fairly close, and just as curious about us, as we were of him!
They are usually quite shy and far away, but this one watched us closely, from the top of that rocky outcrop

Btw, “Gams” is the German name for an “Alpine Chamois
And here he is, at home in his snowy landscape

It was a sort of B&W day ;-)

It is always nice to have wildlife in landscape images giving they perspective and depth. You are correct - a great day for B&W. The tonality and smoothness of gradations is very nice - particularly in the last three. Snow in sunlight is a tough nut to crack. You handled it well.

    Nice shot !
Those big logs were probbaly all in the sea and thrown around like crazy by the past storms.
Perhaps not such a good idea to go swimming here when it's rough ;-)

    Middle of the River . . .

A bit of practice with exposure stacking. Put the tripod in the water with spiked feet (recently picked up this Sirui water proof/resistant model). I was struggling to get the clouds (and especially the moon) with good exposure with the deep shadows below the tree line. Sun was already down behind the mountains over my right shoulder. Maybe didn't need to blend, but practice is always good.

Blended two images in Luminar and then imported to Apple Photos with a bit more tweaking.

First attempt at ICM, something we see a reasonable amount of, but not anything I've tried before, so I decided to give it a go yesterday with mixed results. Most were rubbish, but these seemed ok. Interestingly my wife who normally likes my photo's thought these were rubbish. Just goes to show taste is very personal

Having said that I'm going tp print these out and mull over them

These two are the most successful for my taste, rather nice. ICM is much harder than it sounds, and even experienced practitioners produce a lot of 'rubbish' to sort through!

Well done for making the effort to practice - I'm too lazy to carry a tripod most of the time! I've tried blending hand held exposures but usually end up deleting them.
Given the time of day, I wonder if the final image is a bit too bright? For me it loses something of that 'end of the day' feel.
A square crop might be interesting too, with a symmetrical reflection and no sky.

Nice portrait of the descending 'gams'. It amazes me how they move so fluently over near vertical terrain.

I'm always (maybe subconciously) looking for the 'intimate' shots in the landscape, and when I looked at the last and zoomed in, it struck me that just the birch twigs against the distant peaks would make an interesting composition, maybe with the silvery trunk along one side. Might have to focus stack to have both sharp... or would it be better as is...?

This second shot is really good.
The huge dark cloud bank on the left contrasting to the burning Red sunset works really well. When biewing at full res , those stripes through the sun make it look almost otherwordly.
