    The Weekly Landscape Thread

This weekly thread, starting on a Friday, allows us to showcase our Landscape photos and get some feedback.
Opening up discussions, not only on content, style, composition & techniques, but also on the emotion in the image, and of course about the place itself.

    It’s easy to participate

Post an image or short essay with a title and description. To make it easier to view in the forum, all comments should include the original title and at least one of the original images as a quote.

    Thread Guidelines:

    1. This thread is for sharing and developing our Landscape photography skills.
    2. Entries can be a single image or a short photo essay (2 to 10 connected images that tell a story).
    3. Give your entry a clear title and perhaps also explain why you took it, or the story it tells.
    4. Provide constructive feedback on others’ images/essays.
Try to go beyond simple praise or dismissal and explain why you like it, or what caught your eye.
      ”Likes” are encouraged too.
    5. Negative feedback and suggestions are also OK (be polite, honest, and constructive).

Giving feedback is just as important as receiving feedback, both help to improve our artistic and technical skills.

    What is a Landscape photo?

This means different things for different people. For me, it includes a wide range of photos taken outside, … from wide sweeping vistas to smaller details found along the route. Seascapes, landscapes, cityscapes, woodland shots, landscapes at night with some stars, and lots more are all OK. They could also include man-made objects and people or animals outside, but they are not usually the main subject. Show us, with your photos, what Landscape Photography means to you.

    Motivation

I love to go hiking in the natural world and capture photos along the way. It keeps me fit (physically and mentally) and provides some beautiful memories. Processing those images when I return is fun too, it often helps to enhance what I saw.

    Downloading and reposting

It’s often challenging to verbalise comments about images. Instead, it’s sometimes easier to “show.” Unless the original poster specifically states otherwise (in each original post), participants are free to download, alter, and repost images in replies to express their analysis and critique. The reposted image may remain permanently or be removed after a short period. Downloaded and altered images shall not be used for any other purposes or uploaded elsewhere.

Enough said,… Go out, enjoy the open air, take some photos. Bring back the memories and post them here in the Weekly Landscape Thread 😊

...looking forward to seeing your images,

    A winter’s walk

A walk through the woods to the local stream

The snow in the local forest here in Pilsbach is currently very hard, with a frozen layer on top, which makes walking difficult, but it does look good, especially with the sunlight shining through.

    Sunrise Revisited

My image last week, some things were pointed out. It was taken at sunrise with the scene was unevenly lit. That was the beauty of that time of the day. It can also be a curse in B&W as the color of the light is irrelevant in B&W, what is relevant is the directionality and quality of the light at sunrise. When I first edited it, I was not really satisfied. I took it 3 years ago so it's had enough time to "simmer" as Gary Winogrand often said so I could look at it with fresh eyes.

A little reframing accentuate the leading line of the floor running between the peaks. It also eliminate the wall on the upper right that was starting to get sun and caused a distraction. A little good old dodging on the lower right corner blends the tonality helped pull the eye in and accentuate the floor and leads the eye back to the spotlighted peaks. I also cropped it to 4x5 to square it up a bit.

It often helps to let an image simmer and come back to it so the taken image can be evaluated and edited without the bias of what you saw when you took it.

Yes, I think it is an improvement !
The simmering is now complete with this new processing ;-)
The leading lines on the floor now take you nicely to that sunlit peak without the previous bright distractions on the right.

Yes, I like this version. Thanks for doing the changes.

    Some sunlight after all

Today was quite cold but sky cleared somewhat and I went to coast to capture some of it.

Love this image, nice contrast between snow and water and warm light in background is lovely.

I like #1 with the path/snow, the sun, and the nice shade of green on the trees. Very crisp and refreshing. (That was a sales/marketing line from a local brewery many years ago!)

I really like this one... the "ice burgers" leading to the distant city and the warm sky above. Location? (I forgot to ask last week when you posted similar pictures.)

Lake Tapps and Mt. Rainier -- another panorama. This was where we would water ski in high school (mid/late-1970's). The houses you see here did not exist back in those days. The lake is man-made - initially for the purpose of hydropower generation (combined with summer swimming/boating recreation). It is fed by a diversion flume from the White River - which originates from the Winthrop Glacier on Mt. Rainier. They would draw-down the water level in the winter to generate power, and then start re-filling the lake via the diversion flume in late-spring. The water was a beautiful milky-blue color in April/May - and of course on the first warm sunny day in May we all wanted to go water skiing! The question was... who is going first? The water was COLD COLD COLD!

This is the Cazneaux Tree, a River Red Gum made famous by Australian photographer Harold Cazneaux who photographed it in 1937. He named the print "The Spirit Of Endurance". The tree is situated in the Southern Flinders Ranges in South Australia, just outside Wilpena Pound which is in the background.

Well, I like yours better than the original. : ) That said, I can't help but think that a much wider framing cropped to 3:1 or so in landscape mode would not have been better still. However, that, of course, would be a different photo emphasizing emptiness rather than emphasizing the tree itself, presuming the 3:1 photo featured a distraction free background focused on the tree.

    Trees not in snow.jpg

(The photo title comes from a post in another thread where I did a BW conversion that made it appear as if the trees were in the snow.)

This feels like a nice improvement, and quite agree with the sentiments about letting it simmer. Always surprise myself when I come back to old images.
