    The Weekly Landscape Thread

This weekly thread, starting on a Friday, allows us to showcase our Landscape photos and get some feedback.
Opening up discussions, not only on content, style, composition & techniques, but also on the emotion in the image, and of course about the place itself.

    It’s easy to participate

Post an image or short essay with a title and description. To make it easier to view in the forum, all comments should include the original title and at least one of the original images as a quote.

    Thread Guidelines:

    1. This thread is for sharing and developing our Landscape photography skills.
    2. Entries can be a single image or a short photo essay (2 to 10 connected images that tell a story).
    3. Give your entry a clear title and perhaps also explain why you took it, or the story it tells.
    4. Provide constructive feedback on others’ images/essays.
Try to go beyond simple praise or dismissal and explain why you like it, or what caught your eye.
      ”Likes” are encouraged too.
    5. Negative feedback and suggestions are also OK (be polite, honest, and constructive).

Giving feedback is just as important as receiving feedback, both help to improve our artistic and technical skills.

    What is a Landscape photo?

This means different things for different people. For me, it includes a wide range of photos taken outside, … from wide sweeping vistas to smaller details found along the route. Seascapes, landscapes, cityscapes, woodland shots, landscapes at night with some stars, and lots more are all OK. They could also include man-made objects and people or animals outside, but they are not usually the main subject. Show us, with your photos, what Landscape Photography means to you.

    Motivation

I love to go hiking in the natural world and capture photos along the way. It keeps me fit (physically and mentally) and provides some beautiful memories. Processing those images when I return is fun too, it often helps to enhance what I saw.

    Downloading and reposting

It’s often challenging to verbalise comments about images. Instead, it’s sometimes easier to “show.” Unless the original poster specifically states otherwise (in each original post), participants are free to download, alter, and repost images in replies to express their analysis and critique. The reposted image may remain permanently or be removed after a short period. Downloaded and altered images shall not be used for any other purposes or uploaded elsewhere.

Enough said,… Go out, enjoy the open air, take some photos. Bring back the memories and post them here in the Weekly Landscape Thread 😊

...looking forward to seeing your images,

    The way back home

2 days ago we hiked again in in one of our favourite areas in the Hochkönig region.
This is a place that’s easy to get to and it's easy to hike with the snow shoes. There’s nearly always snow in the winter.
Here’s two shots from the way back home.

Those are excellent. Very fresh. I can feel the air! I think you captured the real feel of the light. Also, my favorite aperture for landscapes... f/11. LOL. We have not had much snow this winter here in the western US. California is supposed to get some snow this weekend and it may push into the Rockies. But here in the Pacific Northwest we are WAY DOWN... 40% below average snowfall. So... I have only been skiing once this year. We did a lot of snowshoeing back in 2021 and 2022... Covid... when everyone wanted to be outside. I have some good pictures from those adventures since it was easy to take the camera along. Which is the nice thing about snowshoes or XC. If you are going to smoke down the hill like Franz Klammer, don't bother taking you camera! LOL. I am not an XC skier, so I have a question about the two tracks in picture #2. Is there a grooming machine that does this? Or... can independent skiers actually make tracks that are so perfectly aligned? :-) Or is that from some sort of vehicle? Are XC tracks maybe more closely spaced? As I recall, there were signs advising the snowshoe folks to respect (avoid or at least step-over) the XC tracks. Were you using a 50mm Z lens, or do you use the FTZ adapter? During the snowshoe hikes, I mostly used the 20mm 1.8G lens. Great results and it does very well with flare and sunstars (which is good if it is sunny). I know I don't need it, but I have been thinking about the 35mm 1.8G as an ideal walk around landscape lens. The 24-120 is fine, but it is a bit bulky.

    Many thanks :-)

In Austria we have had the coldest winter this year for the last 9 years. It has been just like the good old days. Those previous winters had been breaking records for the warmest ever, a real sign of the global warming! I expect next year will be warm again after this brief respite :-(

Yes the XC tracks here are made by a grooming machine that makes both of those tracks at the same time. The XC skis are longer and thinner and the tracks are fairly close together. We discussed bringing the XC skis on our next trip :-)
This particular area has all three of the main types of skiing:
    - XC on tracks like these,
    -"normal" downhill alpine skiing, and
    - Backcountry ski touring.
It's amazing how up the ski touring people can get up on the mountains, then they get the reward of being able to ski down. Being aware of any current avalanche dangers is very prudent! I never learnt deep snow skiing so I don't do ski touring, but a lot of friends prefer this to all the the other types of skiing.

yep, I'd say it's a common courtesy not to damage the XC tracks, and seems the Austrians don't need any special signs to tell them that ;-)

I put the lightest lens on the camera for this trip, the little 50mm F/2 "Z" prime from the "AIR" series of Viltrox. I didn't feel like carrying my usual Z24-120 that day and 50 is a nice FL for such shots. The Viltrox has a very good IQ.
Last year I made a longer trip with just that little 50 and quite enjoyed the "only one focal length" experience . Here's some of those photos if you want a look.
I also have the Nikon Z 35 F/1.8, but I've never done a photo trip with just a 35 mm lens , maybe I could try that sometime soon.
