The Weekly Landscape Thread

This weekly thread, starting on a Friday, allows us to showcase our Landscape photos and get some feedback.
Opening up discussions, not only on content, style, composition & techniques, but also on the emotion in the image, and of course about the place itself.

It’s easy to participate

Post an image or short essay with a title and description. To make it easier to view in the forum, all comments should include the original title and at least one of the original images as a quote.

Thread Guidelines:

1. This thread is for sharing and developing our Landscape photography skills.
2. Entries can be a single image or a short photo essay (2 to 10 connected images that tell a story).
3. Give your entry a clear title and perhaps also explain why you took it, or the story it tells.
4. Provide constructive feedback on others’ images/essays.
   Try to go beyond simple praise or dismissal and explain why you like it, or what caught your eye.
   ”Likes” are encouraged too.
5. Negative feedback and suggestions are also OK (be polite, honest, and constructive).

Giving feedback is just as important as receiving feedback, both help to improve our artistic and technical skills.

What is a Landscape photo?

This means different things for different people. For me, it includes a wide range of photos taken outside, … from wide sweeping vistas to smaller details found along the route. Seascapes, landscapes, cityscapes, woodland shots, landscapes at night with some stars, and lots more are all OK. They could also include man-made objects and people or animals outside, but they are not usually the main subject. Show us, with your photos, what Landscape Photography means to you.

Motivation

I love to go hiking in the natural world and capture photos along the way. It keeps me fit (physically and mentally) and provides some beautiful memories. Processing those images when I return is fun too, it often helps to enhance what I saw.

Downloading and re-posting

It’s often challenging to verbalise comments about images. Instead, it’s sometimes easier to “show.” Unless the original poster specifically states otherwise (in each original post), participants are free to download, alter, and re-post images in replies to express their analysis and critique. Downloaded and altered images shall not be used for any other purposes or uploaded elsewhere.

Slap Savica

All the waterfalls in Slovenia have a name like “Slap xxx”.
Slap Sevica is beautiful and one of the popular ones!
The water flows long distances underground in caves before finally emerging and falling here for 78m.
Cave divers have followed its flow back into the mountain for 560m

Morning Calm

Up near the headwaters of the Wind River

I like it ! The sun in the image is handled well, looks very bright, but soft, almost like a winter sun. The tree contrasts nicely to it and the distant view is very attractive.

A whole mountain range in a small looking lake!
The long horizontal layers in those well-lit mountains look good and, as so often in your images, an interesting sky to go with the subject

It's great to visit those local spots time and time again. They somehow look different each time; Maybe its a different time of day or year, different light, different weather or also just different feelings inside the photographer, which I feel has some effect on the images we produce.

This is another good one.
I have mixed feelings about the stick in the foreground. It adds some depth but does distract a bit. An experiment to crop out the bottom to make a pano format might be worth trying, see what you think?

After a business meeting downtown... on the drive home... I spotted a containership in the harbor being assisted by tugs. So, I thought... maybe a quick detour to the viewpoint on the other side of the bay might be worthwhile and yield some possibilities? I had the camera with me in the car. But... I had to hurry since it is about a 5-10 minute drive to the viewpoint. Six frames stitched (landscape). Reduced to approx. 50% of original size (pixels) and 1/4 size (bytes). Hamilton Viewpoint.

Lots of fantastic detail in this pano shot. Nicely taken and processed.

Interesting things are going on, so it’s worthwhile looking around at the zoomed in Hi-res version.
I’m guessing that it’s the smaller green container ship that is being assisted here?
Amazing that much bigger MSC container ship seems to get on just fine without any assistance.

p.s. I remember a similar quick drive to get to the other side of a valley a few years back. I was in Iceland and the sun was beginning to set. I knew the light would be good ,… but over there, and not where I was standing now. So, as fast as sensibly possible, we drove off down the fjord and did get there just in time. And the sunset shot came out quite well 😊
