The Weekly Landscape Thread

This weekly thread, starting on a Friday, allows us to showcase our Landscape photos and get some feedback.
Opening up discussions, not only on content, style, composition & techniques, but also on the emotion in the image, and of course about the place itself.

It’s easy to participate

Post an image or short essay with a title and description. To make it easier to view in the forum, all comments should include the original title and at least one of the original images as a quote.

Thread Guidelines:

1. This thread is for sharing and developing our Landscape photography skills.
2. Entries can be a single image or a short photo essay (2 to 10 connected images that tell a story).
3. Give your entry a clear title and perhaps also explain why you took it, or the story it tells.
4. Provide constructive feedback on others’ images/essays.
   Try to go beyond simple praise or dismissal and explain why you like it, or what caught your eye.
   ”Likes” are encouraged too.
5. Negative feedback and suggestions are also OK (be polite, honest, and constructive).

Giving feedback is just as important as receiving feedback, both help to improve our artistic and technical skills.

What is a Landscape photo?

This means different things for different people. For me, it includes a wide range of photos taken outside, … from wide sweeping vistas to smaller details found along the route. Seascapes, landscapes, cityscapes, woodland shots, landscapes at night with some stars, and lots more are all OK. They could also include man-made objects and people or animals outside, but they are not usually the main subject. Show us, with your photos, what Landscape Photography means to you.

Motivation

I love to go hiking in the natural world and capture photos along the way. It keeps me fit (physically and mentally) and provides some beautiful memories. Processing those images when I return is fun too, it often helps to enhance what I saw.

Downloading and re-posting

It’s often challenging to verbalise comments about images. Instead, it’s sometimes easier to “show.” Unless the original poster specifically states otherwise (in each original post), participants are free to download, alter, and re-post images in replies to express their analysis and critique. Downloaded and altered images shall not be used for any other purposes or uploaded elsewhere.

A walk to the Dienten river

Most of Austria is experiencing very hot weather with unprecedented drought conditions. Yesterday, we managed to find an area that has been fairly lucky in this respect so far and the meadows here in Dienten still look green and fertile. Elsewhere in Austria a lot of the pastures look brown and so dry that the alpine cows have been taken back to their winter stalls where expensive feed has to be purchased or the herds partially slaughtered.

We hiked from here up to the what we call the “red rock river”
There is still water flowing but much less than normal

Even in this area you can see the effects of storms that are wilder and more violent than typical. When it rains it rains harder !
What you can’t see any more in this shot is the road that used to run at the rivers edge.
It was washed away in the last storm a week or so ago and is now completely closed for hikers beyond this point.

I like this one. Very nice. Regarding all of the pictures... excellent IQ as always. Beautiful tones/colors - the gray rock of the mountain peaks and the dark green conifers stand out to me. Are you saying there were major rainstorms in early August (or late July) that washed-out the road? That seems to be a very odd time of year for that to happen. Here, the risky times of the year (for river flooding) are, naturally, November/December and March/April. We also have similar situations with road washouts that block access to hiking trails and recreational areas. The road to our favorite campground and hiking area (Ipsut Creek; Carbon River and Mowich Lake area) was washed out in 2006 during a massive rainstorm -- and the state decided not to rebuild the road. So, it is now only accessible by hike/bike (5 miles / 8 km; one-way to get from the entrance and parking area to the campground itself where all of the hiking trails converge). It was always a treat (as a little kid) to hike up to the snout of the Carbon Glacier on a hot summer day (and cross the suspension bridge over the Carbon River). Now, on top of the road washout, since 2025, an old steel bridge on the road to the campground entrance has been deemed structurally deficient. So, the only way to get to Ipsut Creek is from the OTHER side of Mt. Rainier via the long-distance Wonderland Trail. Needless to say, we have not done that. Aye, aye, aye! Things do indeed change.

I just checked and this particular storm was exactly 1 week ago on the 7th August.
It was caused by a "standing storm" after the recent heat wave. Normally when the wind blows a storm, it will give each bit of land it travels over some rain, but when the clouds seem to just stay where they are, then one particular unfortunate area gets it all :-(
If you care to open Facebook and search for "Unwetter in Dienten am 7. August 2026" you'll see a post from the local fire brigade with videos of the flooding of this normally little river. Just downstream from here there's protection barriers to protect the town below, they worked well this time.
