    The Weekly Street Photography Thread

Welcome to the street photography weekly thread.
We are hoping to get your images and hear what other members think about them.
It is open to all members of the forum; members can post a single image or a selection of images on a theme in a single post. Multiple posts are allowed.
What constitutes street photography has always been debatable. There are several opinions about it, and we do not want to restrict participants. You can post whatever you deem fits into the genre; however, please be prepared to hear criticism as well.

    Guidelines:
    1. We aim to increase the popularity of street photography and encourage our fellow photographers to be more interested in the genre.
    2. Give your photo a title and include any other information you think is relevant. I personally love to know why you made this photo, what attracted you to make it, and why you like it. But this is NOT MANDATORY.
    3. A single image or a theme-based group of images are allowed. No multiple posts, please.
    4. If you post an image, that means you are ready to hear feedback.
    5. We want to hear your thoughts about others’ posts.
    6. Please keep all posts civilised and polite.
    7. Unless specifically stated otherwise by the original poster, please do not modify the images.

A walk around Leeds (UK) today. I had two themes - this one is "Empty Spaces". Comments invited.

Certainly empty (i.e. devoid of people); but not much space! 😀

In general, for street photography, having a theme in mind usually brings better results. For your theme of empty spaces, I would have used a slightly different approach if possible. Rather than using completely empty spaces, I would try to place a lone person in the sea of chairs/tables. I think it will bring more drama and highlight the emptiness. Your captures look like more of an architectural take and less street photography. Another thing is the focal length and PoV. I would have used either a wider or longer lens but not 35 mm and try to shoot from a lower point of view. I would like to give an example with one of your shots, the last one. If I were going to shoot this frame for the theme of empty spaces, more likely I would have used a telephoto (60-100mm ish depending on the frame), placed myself in the middle of the corridor that was created by the placement of tables on the level of the tables. I just imagine telephoto will bring a compression of the scene which has enough depth and an unusual PoV.

It is a good one, it would have been much better if the brass facing the woman.

Thank you for your comments. Much appreciated. I'll try and respond:

Thanks - that was my intention.

Unfortunately, I could only photograph what was there. And there was nobody. I couldn't really go up to a stranger passing by and say 'please sit there while I take a picture' 😁

It was what I had 'loaded' at the time. I've got a 16mm (24) and a 27 (40) which fit into my small bag with the X-E5. Personally, I thought the 23 (35) was about right, but I will try others in the future, to see what it produces.

    Thanks again for the feedback.

You’re welcome. I usually prefer wider lenses than 35mm, but there are some scenes that feel better with longer lenses. I think it depends on the photographer. That’s why I like the MFT 12-60 or 12-32 kit lenses very much; they’re small but versatile gems (OK, the 12-60 isn’t as small as the 12-32).
