    The Weekly Street Photography Thread

Welcome to the street photography weekly thread.

We are hoping to get your images and hear what other members think about them.
It is open to all members of the forum; members can post a single image or a selection of images on a theme in a single post. Multiple posts are allowed.
What constitutes street photography has always been debatable. There are several opinions about it, and we do not want to restrict participants. You can post whatever you deem fits into the genre; however, please be prepared to hear criticism as well.

    Guidelines:
    1. We aim to increase the popularity of street photography and encourage our fellow photographers to be more interested in the genre.
    2. Give your photo a title and include any other information you think is relevant. I personally love to know why you made this photo, what attracted you to make it, and why you like it. But this is NOT MANDATORY.
    3. A single image or a theme-based group of images are allowed. No multiple posts, please.
    4. If you post an image, that means you are ready to hear feedback.
    5. We want to hear your thoughts about others’ posts.
    6. Please keep all posts civilised and polite.
    7. Unless specifically stated otherwise by the original poster, please do not modify the images.

    Pothole repairer.
I don’t have much new photography to share so I’ll be showing you pothole repairs for a while. :)

It was a lovely day on Wednesday, so I went for a little walk around Manchester.

This person was just sat there on his phone, reaching blindly for his coffee. Perfect moment...

More landscape that street, but from low down, I got the sky and the water. The aeroplane trail was (to me) a bonus.

    Just sitting in the sun.

This was in the John Rylands library. I took a few pictures in there, but this one was different.

I then cropped in to show the picture. I hadn't noticed it until then, but it's really different.

Lastly, we had some lads practicing jumps on their skateboards. I managed to get this one with the shadow, which I quite like.

Feel free to comment on any.

This is good and nicely geometric:)
I would play with exposure/curves/contrast a little - would that change anything, hard to say.

    EB010137-1_(Supersize).jpg

    Very good!
Idea for experimenting - crop out either half of or entire postament at right. That would create some serious imbalance, which may have quite strong effect - positive or negative, can't say without seeing :)

    Arvo - here's your suggestions.

I like this - much whiter. I did play with tone curves as you suggested.

I'm not sure about this one. Cutting out the statue plinth isolates him too much and there's no context. But others may disagree.

It's not a B&W style I am used to. To me, it looks OK until you open it full screen, then I don't like it. What do you do to achieve that effect.

Thanks for stopping by and the comment ...

What exactly is it you don't like? Maybe that I have moved it from a photo toward graphic art? Something I often do with photographs since moving to digital ... As to what I did here I really no longer remember as I am taking these from the files and this was done in March 2024. When I backup files I usually keep the Raw file and the Jpg processed file (the one seen here) but throw away the tiffs and processed files that have that information! ... Could I do this again ... Possibly if I wanted to spend the time...

I think the move away from digital and into art. For some reason, it doesn't gel with me. Maybe if it were colour??? Or maybe it's a style I am not used to and as is normal, anything strange is to be feared 😁

But as a scene, I think it's great. The two people in front of the decaying wall and the newspapers really tells a story.

On my screen it looks like reduced saturation or maybe split-tone but not B&W (grayscale).

    That's a very cool shot.

  • March 20, 2026, 5:15 p.m.

It certainly is in colour and it certainly is an art :)

I personally would like see more of this kind of artistic images here - for me artistic processing adds another interesting layer over [just a] photograph. Of course successful artistic expression creates stronger emotions and makes some viewers to like the image and some viewers to not like the same image - it is is quite similar to hit lists, where same songs often share both "the best" and "the worst" places :)

Spectacular, the atmosphere is very well captured and with its touch of dynamism (that 1/60 foot is perfect!)…

Great series, Alan. And you nailed it with the skater and his shadow!

I love that scene: the setting, the characters and, especially, the lighting. The processing is definitely very daring... and in this case, it works really well.

Thanks. Did you think the skater with or without the plinth was the better photo?

Interestingly, I posted the original (with plinth) in a group led by Brian Duckett, who I admire as a street photographer. His response was:

When I asked what would make it better, he said:

I don't disagree, but what are your thoughts?

    ¡Hola Alan!
The timing is perfect, the lighting is well controlled, with the protagonist standing out against the darker background. The shadow is very nice and it's in the right direction to align with the skater and the pedestal, forming a diagonal line that runs across the entire frame. And if the guy can't see the contrast between the protagonist's dynamism and the solidity of those feet on the pedestal, that's his problem 😀

Thank you. I thought that, but he's the "expert".

I'll keep doing what I like.

    Cheers
