The Weekly Street Photography Thread #70 24/07/2026

The SET UP
Gone is the day when all you had to do was grab your camera and head out for a day of shooting. Today, we have to be electronic wizards with a Phd in science to get it all right. And, if you think it is cheap to get it all right then you've a lesson coming for you. (I know most viewers of street object to capturing subjects at close range with eye contact because it appears to invade a subject's privacy. Unfortunately, that is the sort of street that I do. Generally I shoot within 6 to 8 feet of my subject. I fully display my camera. I do not in anyway secret my activity. Some subjects don't object. When they do, if they give me a chance, I explain what and why I am doing what I do. Most seem o.k. with it after I've explained. If they still are not happy I delete the photo and move on. I am not afraid of people nor of photographing them. It seems most street portrait shooters are. Presently, I am delving into a new aspect of this by applying digital art effects to photos I've shot. I hope to post some of those when I feel comfortable with doing it.)

The Sweeper

This is an ordinary street shot taken with a Nikon S8100 camera in auto mode. There was no special effects applied in-camera. The art effects seen here were applied in editing. This is something that I have been experimenting with. What concerns me is that it stands outside of the normally expected conventions of street photography which I try to shoot within such as: black&white or mono, square frame, etc. Should anyone who does street find this offensive in any way please state why it offends you. Maybe I can alter this 'style' in some way so that it is more acceptable. Or maybe it belongs in a different thread. One more appropriate for photos edited in this way. Thank you for looking. What Shall We Talk About

My preferred style of street is to photograph individual people or situations. Generally I don't take photos of street scenes or scenes where people are in them. I thought this photo would be appropriate to discuss street photography in its many aspects. What shall we talk about? (For some reason loading the photo only loads thumbnails rather than the full sized photo. I am not doing anything different than in the past. I have no idea why it is doing this. Even if it doesn't match one's own style, it is always pleasant and enriching to see different ways of doing things and expressing oneself, so it will be a pleasure to see your contributions.
As for the images of the street sweeper, I must say I like both: a more formal portrait or a more colorful, painterly reinterpretation—each with its own appeal, whether more documentary or more expressive...
