Good morning to everyone wherever you are in the world. Wormsmeat is off on his travels again - let's hope it's not as eventful as his last trip.

    Mountains and Lakes

I'm away too at the moment, in what my husband refers to as my 'spiritual home', a small corner of the southern French Alps.

Using light to separate woodland layers
in a woodland shot it's often possible to separate the layers of trees using fog.
The same is sometimes possible using sunshine that hits only a few trees.

Here are two shots of this effect from a hike last weekend
I think I prefer the horizontal shot but my wife prefers the vertical.

Another example with the light hitting just a swathe of autumn leaves on the slope

Last week I posted 2 shots processed quick with an ipad, here are the same two shots processed with a bit more TLC
Maybe the first of these two looks like a tender moment where one mountain is embracing the other one?

And here's some more views along the way of a very enjoyable hike, in one of my favourite regions on the way to the Riedinger waterfalls,...

Wow, Fantastic scenery! I can see why you like it here !
The mist hanging in the mountain peaks really adds some atmosphere to these.
The autumn colours are nice and warm and the sun came out later and the wind dropped allowing for, the shot looking up to the sunny peak, and that great reflection shot :-)

    Open house, pt. 2

During open house event I visited also marine academy, branch of technical university. Yo no soy marinero (o capitan :D), but during my university studies it was just regular branch of university in other end of city and we had our lectures there. On Saturdays, which was quite drag. It was long time ago and I had only vague memories how this building looked like so I used opportunity to visit it.

This old photo shows how this peninsula looked like 100 years ago. This building in center was built as main office for shipyards, shipyards were built as response of Russian empire to defeat in Battle of Tsushima during Russian-Japanese war.

This is how it looks today.
    PA080207_DxO.jpg

Side view. It was stormy day and as this building is on peninsula the wind was very strong, I had to walk "sailors walk" when being outside, otherwise wind gusts would have pushed me down.

    Drama

The reason I visited Santa Maria degli Angeli, Bussetto, the subject of my post last week, was to see a "Compianto sul Cristo Morto" , by Guido Mazzoni (1476/7). The two kneeling figures are said to represent Giovanni Lodovico and Pallavicino Pallavicino, Marchesi di Busseto, who paid for the construction of the church. This set is still painted, and not stripped of its colouring like the more famous set of figures by the same artist in Modena.

The second set of pictures is of a Romanesque Pieve near Salsomaggiore (Parma). I had a building project next to this church many years ago. At the time I peeped inside. I arrived with a distinct picture of the church in my mind of the church. Our mind plays tricks, and our memory deforms things. The reality of the interior was totally different from what I remembered.

A lovely set of pictures, difficult to pick one over the others. Probably the first and last are the standouts.

Makes me miss the Val d'Aosta, which is similar to this landscape.

Your wife is probably right about the tree shots, but the first gives more context.

This set reminds me I must get back up into the mountains again.

    Very austere and forbidding.

The wire keeping the nuts in place puzzled me, to wonder why they did that as a bit of wire like that has little strength.

I think I prefer the horizontal shot of the woodland. Feels more balanced.

We've had a lot of rain here in the last 48 hours, so streams and grassy meadows are now awash. How's it been at your end of the Alps?

Interesting old photo. I went on Google maps and compared the peninsula now with the 100 year old view.

Yes knots are still required learing! I have a son-in-law who was until recently in the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, and yes, he had to learn knots!!

These figures are amazing. I wonder if the individuals are based on real people (sponsors) as in so many other art works. It's fascinating to look into the faces of people from ages past.

The little church is pleasantly simple but elegant. How did you remember it?

The two kneeling figures are said to be portraits of the guys who paid for this installation. But they seem very similar to the ones in Modena.

I had a building site next door about ten years ago. I remembered a church with a big Madonna fresco in the apse and the apse to my left when I entered. It seemed a vivid memory. The Madonna is a little fresco on a column, and the church is rotated by 180° from what I remembered. There is a fresco in the apse, but it is very different to my imagined one. The weird thing is that I could almost see the picture in my mind.

The memory does play starnge tricks sometimes.
