    Calatrava revisited

Back from travels, these are the images I made of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Auditorio with my 'real' camera. They were all hand-held.

Much of the exterior is covered with a mosaic of white ceramic shards which sparkle in the light.

There was a performance going on the evening I was there, so the foyer was open, where I came across this model of the building. Unfortunately, there was no access to more of the interior.

    Friday Night's Sunset

My first post work walk of the year just about got me to The Nab in time to catch sunset. This is looking across Chorley towards Harrock Hill. I did frame this for X-Pan format when I shot it, but decided to open it out to 2:1 when editing to include a bit of the snow dusted field in the foreground.

Two weeks from today will be the first day of my retirement. I will have more time for my photography hobby then. :-)

So my friend. If you submitted this for exhibition night at my camera club the judges would ding this entry for two things.

Cutting off part of the circle in the lower left corner.

The subject is looking to the right but the viewer's eye is drawn to the left by the debris in the water.

The first photo is probably my favorite photo of all those I've ever seen you post! 👍

The last one is especially good, as well.

The second one needs a little more sky above the roof. That is something you can add in Photoshop without too much trouble.

It is an appealing overlook. However, if it were mine, I would crop it differently because there are two places for the eye to go as you submitted it.

    Renaissance Parma

I went to Parma to photograph some of the Renaissance architecture in this small city. Parma has always been one of my favourite Italian cities, it has an almost endless amount of interesting monuments to see.

First off the Basilica, Santa Maria della Steccata, a cross shaped church with sumptuous decoration inside, by Parmigianino and others. It can get a bit crowded, so I got there early at opening time to get some crowd free views.

Next ,San Giovanni Evangelista, behind the much more famous Cathedral, again with a lot of decoration, with the cupola painted by Coreggio. It was my first visit to this place, and I plan to make another visit as thre are things I missed.

Lastly, the imposing Wedding cake style, Chiesa della Santissima Annunziata, which I photographed only externally, as they are restoring the interior.

I mostly used my 15mm Laowa shift and the Nikon 24PC for these pictures. I used my monopod with feet for these pictures. These are mostly 3 frame HDR combinations

A really great set, you really have captured the essence of this building. Calatrava really does do photogenic buildings.

The first one looks like a huge sea monster, and the fourth reminds me of garden slugs for some reason.

The model gives some idea of the Engineering challenges that must have been "fun" to overcome.

    Enjoy your new found liberty!

I prefer the second shot, as it is somewhat mysterious. I find the first a bit too oversaturated.

This is nice when seen big and you can see all that MF detail.

I enjoyed you last weeks set too.

I think I'd disagree with your suggested crop as it throws the balance of the image off, ignoring and cutting into the main subjects, namely the elliptical band of sunset colours in the centre of the image and the town below it.

A better approach might have been to clone out the bright patch in the clouds as shown below (quick and dirty job using Capture One's mediocre heal tool, I could do a much nicer job round tripping it into Photoshop or Affinity), which I think addresses what you're finding distracting, but doesn't break the balance of the image as I intended it. Of course that would get me disqualified from a landscape photography competition, so I would never do that.

I didn't find that patch of cloud particularly distracting, but there was actually one detail in the original image that did irk me and it's the brightly lit street just below that area, so I've addressed that too using a luma mask and selectively toning down the brightest parts of that spot.

Beautiful. The twinkly lights give it just the right balance of light and dark. Essence of winter evening.

Congratulations! Long may it last 😀

I only understood the orange-lit forground when I saw the title. I'm not sure the orange colour works for me, but I guess it captures the vibe.

Thanks, I was quite happy with last week's set, it was good to be back out on what felt like a proper mountain (even if it was a relatively tiny one). The Z7 seemed pretty happy with the drizzly conditions too, with no obvious signs of water ingress when I checked it upon returning home.

To really appreciate the detail in that shot, here's a full res crop from the centre, exported directly from C1.

    DSCF6194 3.jpg

This shot was taken with the 45-100 (roughly 35-80 equivalent) which is one of the better zoom lenses in the system. I still think I could eke a bit more out of it with a more substantial tripod than my lightweight carbon fibre Benro jobby, which seems a bit prone to resonance in even the slightest wind. Mind you, that thing is over 2KG, so unless someone's making sturdier tripods that are no heavier I'll be sticking with it.
