From the bent rod seems like he has catch and tries to pull it out? Maybe there was no room elsewhere to do this?

Yes, the waves were quite big and I had to stay on higher ground to not get my feet wet. But event there it was hard to keep focus on birds, as half of time they were hidden behind waves.
