I think it just give light to one of the side chapels. I have never been inside. It is a monument that is always on the verge of being restored, but work never gets beyond surveys and studies.
That was the atmosphere I was aiming for in some of these, so I'm glad you picked it up. The smooth old cobbles reflecting the light was what attracted my eye in these old streets.
I was quite pleased with the sharpness of these too. In some cases I took two or three shots, but mostly I needn't have bothered.
Ah, there you are! I've been waiting for this thread to start in its usual location and was starting to wonder if everyone was okay, I hadn't spotted that you'd moved it this week. D'oh.
Anyway, late on Saturday afternoon I was heading up to the moors and made the impromptu decision to instead jump on the motorway and take a trip up to The Lake District. My initial idea was to head to the National Trust car park at Blea Tarn, then work my way up the side of Lingmoor Fell for an elevated perspective.
Along the way I made a pit stop at Ings where I (unusually) decided I wasn't really in the mood for climbing steep hills or negotiating the narrow roads around there, which I figured would be quite busy at this time in the afternoon. So instead, as I was already at the start point I decided to retrace the walk I did with a friend just before Christmas when we got caught in a blizzard.
On the previous walk, my friend lost a ring, while switching layers when we stopped for refreshments, so I thought I'd go and look for it. It seemed unlikely that I'd find it just lying there six months later, but, you never know. As you might expect, I didn't find it, but I did have a rather pleasant seven mile walk in some beautiful countryside and even though I supposedly wasn't climbing any hills, somehow I still managed 1,500ft of ascent.
On this walk I took my semi lightweight kit, the Nikon Z8 + 24-70 f/2.8S. I could have gone even lighter, but having taken the 24-70 f/4.0S out on the moors last weekend in order to keep things light, it reminded me just how much better the results seem with the full fat 24-70 lens, even at f/8.0, making it well worth carrying the extra few hundred grammes. I also brought the 14-30 and 24-200 along for the ride, but they never left the bag. All images processed from individual raw files in Capture One Pro 23.
Kentmere from Hugill Fell
I've noticed Williamson's monument atop of Hugill Fell on previous visits to this area, but never checked it out. Hugill Fell is not particularly high and I was already on the lower reaches, so I figured I'd head up to the top to take a look. Along the way I came across this rather nice view of Kentmere.
Access Denied
This is as close as I got, with this helpful sign informing me that I could be prosecuted if I proceeded any further. As I'm in no physical state to outrun a landowner these days and that wall didn't look to be in any state to survive me climbing over it, I decided to retreat. So close and yet so far.
Cottongrass Tree
On the way back down, I spotted this tree with a nice patch of cottongrass beside it.
Kentmere MKII
Another shot of Kentmere taken further down the hillside.
Generic Scenery
It was nice to actually have a view this time. On the previous visit, the blizzard significantly reduced visibility.
The Gateway
I took a similar shot to this back in December...
...of course, back then it was all covered in snow and kind of magical looking.
The Long and Undulating Road
Fast forward to much later in the evening when I've passed the furthest point of the route and I'm on the road back to the car.
Cow
I often find myself admiring the way the light is hitting the grass, but completely stuck for a composition to make use of it. On this occasion I was lucky. I also took advantage of the f/2.8 aperture of my lens to get a somewhat dreamy look.
Cows
Another f/2.8 shot, this time pulling in the break in the clouds for dramatic effect.
Gate
The gates in this neck of the woods are in a bit of a state. This one's using a bit of twine to fasten it. At least it's got a full set of bars, unlike a few I passed through further up the hill that also, suspiciously, had sheep on either sides of them.
Tree
This looked quite promising when I lined it up to shoot it, but now I don't know.
Lovely grazing light in the distance in 'The Gate'. I was trying to photograph cotton grass myself today, but with less cooperative weather. Always a nice subject.
