Tuscany, Italy. One gets the feeling this landscape hasn't changed much in hundreds of years. Although the mode of transport has.

    Power lines
Whatever you might think about powerlines in landscape photos, you have to admire the engineers that built these huge 300kV Pylons that take power right over the misty mountains

A different kind of Italian church

Orkney! The Italian Chapel on Orkney is a fascinating piece of history. Built by Italian prisoners of war using a couple of nissen huts, spare concrete, plasterboard and paint.

I actually think they work here, they draw the eye into the distance. Nice mist too.

That's pretty cool. Such a disparity between facade and actual building.
We have a similar set up on a nearby church. A huge, stuck-on front, masking a very ordinary building behind.

Lovely morning shot with the light starting to stream in through the mist.
Those rows of long tall cypress trees are a true characterristic symbol of the "Toscana" area as it's known in German. My wife loves them!

In 2003 I was traveling around India and went up into the foothills of the Himalayas. They were building a dam on the Ganges (sacrilege to many) which I didn't get to see but I saw one set of transmission lines going over a cliff down into a deep valley. The tower at the top was leaning over the edge almost 45 degrees. I was quite blown away with the engineering and what it would have taken to build that.

    Bobbio II

The main reason for my visit to Bobbio, was to see the medieval mosaics in the Abbazia di San Colombano. The abbey was founded by Columbanus, an Irish monk.

With 50 cents you can illuminate the mosaics, for a good while. The only downside is that we see them upside down.

The main church is nothing speciali

Classic Tuscany with those Cypress trees. You had some nice misty light for this shot.

How did your holiday in Italy go?

Right, these pylons always make me wonder about how they were installed. I believe helicopters play a pig part.

I find power lines to be a real nuisance in landscape photography, but the classic steel pylons themselves can really add something and they certainly don't detract here. A wonderful landscape and impressive feat of engineering.

Wow, those mosaics are amazing. The first shot where we can see the vaulted ceiling is nice.
And I think that 'nothing special' church is quite charming.
