In the Plaza de la Encarnación is Metropol Parasol, affectionately known by the locals as 'The Setas de Sevilla' or 'The Mushrooms of Seville' are a structure and a tourist attraction and is the largest wooden construction in the world.

Ephemeral garden art

A few years back my wife used wood & bark chippings to create a pattern in an area under some trees.
This was not designed to last for ever, and, of course, it slowly faded away all turning to soil in the end.
Nice while it lasted, and the fact that it was only there for a few months made it somehow special.

In a different league altogether,...
A master of creating short lived artworks from nature that look incredibly beautiful, partly because they are so intricate, fragile and delicate, is Andy Goldsworthy.
He has books and films describing his work, well worth a look

Frond

New Zealand tree ferns at Logan Botanic Garden, Galloway.

Ephemeral art can be such fun. I used to make patterns in the grass with the mower, and the kids used to make structures out of fallen branches. I've long been a fan of Andy Goldsworthy.

That's a nice feature.
But even more long-lived garden features are still ephemeral.
I had a friend whose parents lived in a Georgian cottage in a picture-postcard village in Dorset, called Sutton Poyntz.
They loved their garden, it was their raison d'etre.
My wife and I visited Sutton Poyntz many years later, hoping they may still be alive and we might surprise them with a visit.
The cottage was covered in scaffold and deserted. Their garden was in rack and ruin. So poignant.
I often wonder if whoever inherits my beloved garden will 'get' it and love it as I do.

These two for me. Although the first doesn't seem as sharp and bright as the others, it's a fine composition..

Nolsoy

Photos from/of Nolsoy island, situating near Tórshavn and easily accessible by ferry, taking 25 minutes ride.

Look to island from Tórshavn fortress. Village and harbor can be seen where profile is lowest.

Wow, the distance to Denmark is something like 1000 km...

View to harbor and mountain. There was track by this mountain to lighthouse in other end of island so I decided to go by it.

Track on side of mountain. And it got worse, to this point and bit further I went with my camera hanging from backpack strap, after a while I had to pack it and use at some spots all four limbs to move on. On track labeled as medium difficulty...

After reaching height 220 meters and track continuing rise I decided to turn back as I had other plans as well and did not want to lose too much time on physical excercise so I decided to attack mountain from other side. On a way I met with sheep losing its fur coat.

And met with golden plover.

Finally reaching my destination, with magnificent view of these moss covered cliffs and boulders. But I was not here for view...

...but for puffins!

Yes, all gardens are ephemeral to a greater or lesser extent, and when we move on we have to accept that the new guardians will have different ideas, or none. I'm going to be visiting my old home village in a couple of weeks, but I'm not sure I want to see what's become of our old garden after just three years.
On the other hand, abandoned gardens have an attraction of their own, the classic 'secret garden'. I remember one wonderful place somewhere in the Wye valley with extensive edwardian terraces and water features all long abandoned. It was magical. But the new owners were intent on restoration...

The one that got away

It is to hot and humid here, in my part of Italy right now to even think about going out and about. So here are some more from my holiday in the UK

I often use Google Maps to pre explore area where we are staying. I was clicking on a few likely monuments of interest, when I came across, this church, St Mary’s Church, Kempley, far from any village hidden, away down a country lane. What is remarkable about this Norman church is the fact that it is one of the very few churches in Britain, where you can see frescoed walls. They like many others were covered by whitewash during the Protestant Reformation, but the were rediscovered and uncovered in 1872.

Everything was shot hand held. My 24 shift lens works quite nicely with the Z7

Just watched the videos (and a couple more). I have a vague recollection of this guy from his leaf circles. His work is just beautiful.

This would have freaked me out. I would have been convinced I'd discovered a new species.

B..b..but, that church. It's pink! Go figure.
You do love a frescoe, interesting to see some from this country through your eyes.

I could not understand why they painted it pink either, Architects strike again!

Yes, over the last few years, I have developed a passion for medieval art. Britain like Italy has a lot of hidden art treasures, if you can dig them out. I much prefer this minor sort of monument, to the more famous places.

I spent some time in Sevilla, on a construction job. I was lucky that I was able to see a lot of this lovely city. This is new though. I had a look on Google, and it looks pretty impressive.
