I had to be up before sunrise this morning yo drop family off at the airport. I decided to take a stroll through downtown on my way back.

And now I feel I went for that stroll with you. An interesting and wildly varying set.

    Ely

Whilst in Newmarket, we managed to fit in a visit to Ely Cathedral. Not as impressive as I was expecting, but a wonderful Cathedral all the same.

    Everything hand held this time.

The most touching thing for me was the messages below the Bomber Command window, from family's remembering aircrew relations lost in WW2. A tragic waste of good mens lives for what?

This is very impressive for hand-held.
I never knew about the Bomber Command window but I've not been.

    Three Evenings

Our new home faces west over Whitbarrow Scar and the distant Lake District peaks. There have been some spectacular evenings this week.

We have a rookery in the trees behind the house, and each evening just after sunset the rooks fly up overhead from their feeding grounds in the valley bottom to their roosting trees. One evening there seemed to be iterally a thousand or more in waves one after the other for about twenty minutes.

    P7125181.jpg

    P7125170.4.jpg

Another evening, after a relentlessly wet day (40mm of rainfall), the clouds parted momentarily...

    P7155182.jpg

Then right on cue when we had visitors, we had one of best sunsets we have seen so far. The peaks run from The Old Man of Conniston on the left, to Crinckle Crags and Bow Fell on the right.

I remember visiting Ely many years ago. As you say, not spectacular as english cathedrals go, but the 'lantern' is unique and impressive.
