    A favourite walk

    Last Saturday I took a favourite walk between the Castle of Carpineti and San Vitale, along an escarpment in the mid Apennines above Reggio. At the end of the walk I took the 24PC to do some pictures of the castle and the interior of the chapel.

    The path takes you through some strange rock formations and Chestnut woods, to the remains of a Twelfth century Pieve. Behind the isolated restaurant/hostel, there is a little museum, containing some artifacts excavated on the site.

    A Stroll on the Coast

    The coastline of Cumbria is mostly unremarkable, with a few muddy-sandy estuaries and areas of dunes. I miss rocky coastlines, but decided it was time for a breath of sea air. Took a walk around Sandscale Haws nature reserve, home to a quarter of the UK's Natterjack Toads - didn't see any!

    The Duddon estuary reaches up into the high fells of the Lake District, but the tops were still shrouded in cloud on arrival. Lots of clumps of Sea Rocket growing on the sand, some below the high tide line.

    This chunk of driftwood had some interesting patterns on it;
    P9095493.jpg

    ...So I tried some multi exposure experiments;

    It was a high spring tide, reaching right up into a small settlement of fishing huts.

    Trying to find a route back through the dunes was a bit of a challenge, partly due to various patches being fenced off, presumably for the toads. But the subtle colours and textures of the vegetaion called for a bit ICM 😁

    I like this walk too - I remember it from your previous visits. The roof tiles are interesting with the scratched decorations. Are these roman? Or medieval?. I like that the plant one shows the roots as well as the plant top.

    This Weeks Roundup

    I haven't been getting out too much of late due to a combination of poor weather, poor fitness and quite likely apathy, but I managed a bit of a wander on the moors above Belmont last weekend. The light was overcast and quite flat while I was out on the walk, but picked up as I was heading back home (which is kinda typical).

    All images taken handheld with the Nikon Z8 and either 24-70 f/2.8S or 70-180 f/2.8. A CPL may have been used on some of them.

    Belmont

    There's not many interesting subjects to choose from on the moors above Belmont, but the impressive church at the heart of the village always catches the eye. Here it is presented from a variety of vantage points along my relatively short walk. I really must endeavour to get up here in time for sunrise one day. Catching the valley filled with mist and backlit by the rising sun would be quite a treat, although knowing my luck it would overcast and possibly raining, so I'll probably just stay in bed instead.

    The winding road running across the moors is a favourite for motorcycle riders and hence something of an accident blackspot. As a result, it is littered with very visible, bright warning signs that are just doing their job I guess, but something that completely ruins the timeless vibe of the image, so they've mostly been eliminated here and in the next image.

    Some quite heavy colour and tone processing involved in this one to get the colours to look palatable(ish).

    DSC_7195.jpg

    A more natural colour palette in this and the next one, although the roadsigns have been nuked again.

    DSC_7265.jpg

    The following image also had some aesthetically unpleasing goalposts the field and a cell tower on the hill, so they had to go too.

    The View From Alance Bridge

    On the way back from Belmont, I decided to drive through Anglezarke, crossing Alance Bridge which is just downstream of the point where Limestone Brook and the River Yarrow merge before flowing into Upper Yarrow Reservoir. Well, normally there's some flowing going on, but not right at this moment. Under normal circumstances, this view would be flooded up to the treeline. Note how the light is so much nicer than it was earlier.

    DSC_7335.jpg

    The following pair of images are looking over the other side of the bridge towards the reservoir. Again, it would normally be flooded up to the treeline.

    The Tail End of Sunset

    And a final image, taken the next day. I was driving home and noticed some fantastically stormy clouds in the sky, so when I got home, I grabbed my camera and headed out again, hoping to catch a nice shot of the clouds. I didn't manage to find a good vantage point for that, but did manage to get this nice shot of the sky over the Mormon temple as the colour was about to completely fade out. Seconds later it was just a blue/grey sheet.

    I think for this coastline, that you need the right light, a crisp sunset or sunrise. I like the stacked Sea Holly shot very much.

    Lots to explore up your way.

    I see some great abstract possibilities with this disk shot close up, with those reflections.
