I haven't managed to get out with a camera this week (and it's not looking good for this weekend by the look of the weather), so here's a further handful of images from Sunday's trip to Birkacre that didn't make the cut last week. All images taken with the Z8 + 24-70 f/2.8S mounted on a tripod. IIRC they're all taken with a CPL. As you might gather from my notes below, I'm not entirely happy with any of these, but although I don't feel they quite work, they all contain some qualities that I really like in spite of their issues, so I figured they were still worth sharing.

Green Tunnel

I took this quite early in the walk. It's looking down the path of the Yarrow as it leaves the Birkacre site. I think the light spilling in at the far end is what attracted me to this scene, however I think I messed up when composing it, originally shooting this in a portrait aspect (2:3) which included more of the river at the bottom and the trees at the top, so when I came to look at it last weekend, I originally discarded it. Anyway, after experimenting with a number of different crops I arrived at this full width 5:4 crop from the upper part of the frame which I think is more satisfying.

Banks Of The Yarrow

Finally, I think this one from Drybones Woods has potential from a compositional point of view, but it needs better light. It was taken at the far end of the walk just before I turned back and by that point, most of the mist had either burned off, or perhaps never formed under the tree canopy this far up the river. Whatever the reason, it was just dull light. But there are some tree arrangements in this scene that I quite like, so it may be one to revisit at a different time of day. Perhaps it would work better in the evening with more backlight.

Another set of great greenery, these are my favorites.

Yup, pantheon from soviet era, built in 1957. It's called Gerassimov's park and palace of culture. Vassily Gerassimov was one of strike organizers in Kreenholm manufacture in the end of 19th century and was sent to Siberia where he died. During soviet era he was "canonized" as proletariat leader and street, park and palace was named after him.

Now abandoned culture palace.

Really magnificent ruins.

University branch building, built to imitate stock exchange building which was in that place in old city. Does it look strange?

Here is another view, showing its inverted nature. Red building is city hall, it was in quite bad shape for long time but in recent years it was renovated and now city council is located there.

Sad to see this Soviet era building reduced to a ruin.

But Uni building is really weird. The Architect must have smoked something strong on the day he dreamt up this building!

I managed to add a couple of locations to my Romanesque project, whilst on holiday in Val Venosta.

San Procolo, on the outskirts of Naturno, (Merano BZ) was a place I really wanted to see. It is now part of a small museum, and you have to pay to enter.

This Church is said to contain some of the oldest frescoes in the Germanic world. They are certainly rather charming. We see a saint on swing, the cartoonish herd of cows with a dog, and a procession of wide eyed women, proceeding to the altar. The artist certainly had a sense of fun. At a higher level we see some later Gothic works.

I had a quick look around the modern museum, which was a nice bonus.

I could not use a tripod here, so these are all and held. But modern camera's are incredibly good at high ISO.

Is he swinging here? Interesting frescoes.

Yes it is known as the Saint on a swing. Do not ask me what it represents. Nobody knows.

Mine is hanging on. I love it.
I have to reset the date every time I change a battery, video doesn't work and the telescopic lens often won't retract.
But too expensive to repair.

I had (well, technically, still have) a Sony VX2000 MiniDV camcorder back in the day that developed the same problem. It turned out there was a little rechargeable battery soldered deep inside it that was meant to maintain the date/time with the battery removed. Back then I ordered a replacement part from the UK service centre, dismantled the camcorder, replaced it and reassembled the camera. I photographed and documented the whole process, eventually sticking it up on a forum somewhere that no longer seems to be around.

These days I don't have the eyesight, dexterity or patience to do that sort of thing (the repair, not the report) and that's assuming I could still get the service manual or parts, which don't seem to be as easy to come by these days.

Not sure what the status of my GM5 is. It worked fine the last time I used it (during lockdown I think), but the battery (kept out of the camera) seems to be completely flat right now, so I'll have to dig out the charger and see if it can still hold a charge.

Agreed on the problem and I'm no stranger to a soldering iron but I think a GM5 would be an explosion of tiny parts once the cover is removed! Don't use it very often so it's no biggie to reset the date but I will have to resolve the lens issue. Wish I'd kept my old 9-18 for it.

Following photos are from city center.
In foreground 2 buildings from medieval time, very few left from this city after WW II bombings and what was left was torn down. In background ugly soviet era apartment building.

Here is another view, showing its inverted nature. Red building is city hall, it was in quite bad shape for long time but in recent years it was renovated and now city council is located there.

The building in the first two is odd in that the coloumns are very grand and the there's very little going on either side.
The 5th is a classic soviet scene.
That building at the end is bizarre! Was the roof added retrospectively?

I find it quite hard to photograph sea under sun, it never seems to showcase what eye sees. But here the result, especially on second image, seems to be perfect.

I know exactly what you mean. You almost need shades to view the second one.

Was a sunny day yesterday and the lighting was just right. Saw these red leaves among the evergreens.

Accidently uploaded a high res version by mistake but have no idea how to remove that one from storage. Woops...

The last shot looks like an impenetrable barrier. Nice one

I rather like this minimalist shot. The Orange leaf really holds the eye.
