I managed to find a place on a CPD course that involved vising the canals that run under Bologna, mostly hidden from view. How it will help me design better, safer structures is another question, but it was a fun afternoon out. Some of these shots were illuminated with a pocket torch at silly ISO numbers. You can actually see stretches of the canal in Bologna in certain places. The stretch of canal we visited once powered mills and supplied water to the town.

The canals are drained every October for maintenance, and visits these are arranged.

What you say? Halloween? Meh, I get halloween worthy costume shows almost every week...

I know that photographing homeless people is discouraged in this thread and I personally avoid doing so. But this scene felt different: poetic, harmonious and yet deeply (for me very deeply) unsettling. My story here isn’t about the homeless man himself. I hope to convey what I felt in that moment.
This is the entrance to Charing Cross tube station. It has a dated, grimy, almost decaying look, yet it’s dotted with modern, high-tech elements. I have some deeper interpretations of this image, but I’ll refrain from sharing them here, as that would move it from the photographic to the political.

PS: It is a SOOC with geometric corrections and mildly reduced shadows of the person's body.
PS II: I found the advertisement panels' texts are also important but I noticed them after I took the photo.

Well, that doesn't seem so stultifyingly boring as some of the courses you're forced to attend. I'd pay to join that tour voluntarily.
I googled what the canals look like when full, they're rather beautiful. I'd never heard of them.
How deep can they get? I have a vague notion the larger ones in Venice are as deep as approx 5m.
It made me consider how the properties there prevent rising damp, presumably the houses are built on non-porous materials or tanked somehow?

Jeez. Difficult to see it's even a person. It's a good shot though.
Don't think the tube map adds anything though, even though it's another rectangle and adds a sense of location.

There is something a bit horror about this shot. Maybe just the day.

These two caught my eye. So it is Halloween all year long where you live?

This would be a pattern shot, without the hand barely visible at the bottom.

Lots of lovely colour tones in this shot.

They are just a few centimetres deep as far as I can see. You can more of less see the water line in my shot. I think they just live with the damp. Maybe some water resisting screed.

They do tours once a year in October, when they maintain the canal system. I found a slot via my professional organisation. I think you can prenote online. www.canalidibologna.itThe tours are in Italian. But you can see the canals from a few viewpoints, as you can see in my pictures. The viewpoints are along the roads running south off of Via Righi. You can see them marked on Google maps.

I had to wear my mountain shoes (or rubber boots) and I had to take a torch. They provided a hard had, as it easy to bang your head on the very low stretches.
