I don't understand train spotting but could see the appeal of boat spotting. They seem altogether more interesting.

Boat spotting - yes! It's interesting to discover a world of international trade, travel and in some cases, military movements. I particularly remember sitting on a headland in southern Greece watching a constant stream of ships passing en route between the Bosphorus and western europe. I use vesselfinder.com to identify more distant ships.

    Winter Sun

Not much to share this week, just a couple of grab shots with my phone on a daily stroll.

I love this. Odd relationship between the two little buildings because of the differing planes that made me keep looking back and forward between the two. And a beautiful frame.

    No Theme

There's been a bit of everything this week; wildlife, weather, landscape and so on. Equipment wise, I've mostly been using the Z8+24-70 f/2.8S and 100-400 4.5-5.6S, but the GFX kit came out for a play on one morning too.

    Some Misty Goodness

It's always a treat when there's a bit of mist, particularly as we don't seem to get a lot around here. This shot is looking across the fields that separate The Nab from Anglezarke reservoir towards Stronstrey Bank.

    DSC_1454.jpg

Returning to The Nab on the same afternoon, here's a selection of some of the trees from the upper reaches in the mist.

    DSC_1458.jpg

    DSC_1462.jpg

    DSC_1474.jpg

Unfortunately the mist didn't extend down into the woods, but this is the scene that greeted me when I emerged at the foot of Nab Wood.

    DSC_1477.jpg

    The Waterman's Cottage

Taken from the bank of Anglezarke reservoir, which currently contains more grass than water while they continue to work on the dam. The cottage is situated beside the point where The Goit (the canal that runs from Roddlesworth to Anglezarke) enters the reservoir. The cottage is looking in a bit of disrepair these days, which is a shame as it's a nice old building.

    Assorted Wildlife Action

I haven't had much success photographing the local Kestrels this week. When I spot them they tend to be simply too far away, but I did get lucky with this reasonable shot.

    DSC_1518.jpg

No such problems with the deer though, I've seen them in abundance and in the case of this particular shot, I virtually bumped into them as they happened to cross the woodland path I was on right in front of me and I had just enough time to grab this shot before they bolted off into the undergrowth.

    DSC_1491.jpg

I noticed this Robin stood on a fencepost and managed to get reasonably close before it flew off.

    DSC_1545 1.jpg

Since taking an interest in Kestrels, I'm tending to notice more birds of prey while they're flying in the sky. They've got a particularly lazy looking style to them as they cruise effortlessly at high altitudes, circling over fields, looking for prey. I spotted this common Buzzard looping over the field I was stood in, but it never really got close enough for a good picture with the 100-400 (on the Z8 in this case), so this image has been cropped and upscaled quite a bit. Still, it's another interesting bird to keep an eye out for.

    DSC_1630.jpg

Finally, I caught a group of deer running across a field, effortlessly leaping over the fences, well, except for the one bringing up the rear who seemed to be a bit lacking in the fence jumping department.

    Dismal Dawn and Creepy Trees

Noting that it won't be long before the clocks go forward and catching a sunrise becomes more of a challenge I made an effort to get out early enough to catch it this week. Unfortunately the sunrise didn't get the memo and was a no show. This is the image I lugged the GFX100S, a couple of lenses and a tripod up The Nab in the dark to capture. As images go, it wasn't really worth the effort, but I think this composition will work if I'm lucky enough to catch a good sunrise, so I will try again over the next few weeks, weather permitting.

    DSCF4208.jpg

Still, it wasn't a complete failure, as I had a nice walk around The Nab and returned through Nab Wood, capturing a good selection of creepy trees along the way.

It looks like there's a bit of a party going on here.

    Well, that was easy!

Today morning I contemplated whether I should go photographing or not. Weather forecast was not promising with cloudiness, I had only 5 hours of sleep and it was quite cold outside. But when I saw some blue sky appearing I packed my camera into backpack, packed myself into warm clothes and went for it. It was well worth of it as today's landscapes were epic, I'd even say: legen ...wait for it... dary! Wherever you look, there is image, one better than other. I managed to go through one battery which hasn't happened long time, walked almost 5 hours and got hundreds of images, some of them (I dare to say) are almost good :P

Here are first picks, with quick processing.

This set really shouts 'January'. While I will be pleased to see longer days and more sunshine, there is something about the lack of urgency that I like about the winter.

Really like this. The bright, fast moving train contrasts so well with the delapidated old signal box, and the splash of red sign on the right balances it up beautifully.

Fabulous, with this being my pick. Just so clean. And the snow looks white, which is very important in these sorts of shots.
