    Lucca

I decided it was time to take a day off on Friday, and went down to Lucca to add some stuff to my Romanesque project. I wanted to see the Basilica di San Frediano in particular. I got there early and it was pretty deserted. They even let me use my tripod. Costs of visiting monuments in Italy is mostly still reasonable. €3 is pretty good compared to the prices we have paid in the UK. The Basilica di San Frediano is the earliest Romanesque church in Lucca and is more Lombard than Tuscan. The main attraction is the fountain in marble.

This week I traded in a lot of stuff that I was not using and sent the Z7 into retirement. I was pretty pleased to bring a Z8 home for €500. Prices for used gear are pretty high at the moment.

Maybe I spent too long in the Basilica. Lucca has a lot of tourism and the town was filling up. Next on the hit list was Chiesa di San Salvatore. It shows heavy a Pisan influence. A bit of creative framing was needed here, to cut out some elements I did not want in the frame.

Chiesa di San Michele in Foro in the centre was impossible, it was packed inside and with guided tour groups. This building needs a sunny day, in midwinter without the crowds.

This the best I could manage.

The last place on my list was the Chiesa dei Santi Giovanni e Reparata. The interesting thing here is the remains of the early church below the later building. Tis is not one of the "must see" places so it was a good visit.

    I nice change of direction.
Enjoyed these, all interesting but this is just brilliant. I think the less tight framing works better.

We have Welsh Poppies (Meconopsis cambrica) naturalised through the village. Ours are orange rather than the usual yellow, and gazing out of the window thes caught my eye among the rubble that will one day become a garden.

Good for you. Sometimes just buying a new bit of kit gives your photography mindset a bit of a fillip.
This second shot plays with my head. Normally your church shots tend to be symmetrical.
My fav building is the remarkable Chiesa di San Michele. A lot of churches seems to use that effect where the facade is considerably larger than the building behind to make it seem grander.
Have you ever tried messing with ND filters in the day to blur out the people?

Such a wealth of interesting history and architecture. I spent a while looking up the churches of Lucca, a place I have never managed to visit. Historic graffiti is fascinating.

A glut of pale blue poppies! How wonderful! Maybe the californian poppies can be encouraged to colonise in a different spot? They are lovely too.

    Here is title:
    P5050042.JPG

Hotel Viru, one of landmarks in center of Tallinn, Estonia. It was built by Finnish company and completed in 1972, first high-rise building at that time. Note the big letters Hotell Viru under roof, I come back to it bit later.
Hotel was intended for foreigners to earn some hard currency, it was almost impossible to stay there for ordinary soviet citizen.
    P5050002.JPG

Stand with famous people who visited that hotel. Among them was Apollo 15 crew, last shah of Iran with his wife etc. Also Elisabeth Taylor. Story goes that she was in film shooting in Leningrad/St. Petersburg and was fed up with soviet reality and wanted to get better conditions. Thus she was brought into Tallinn and Viru hotel, the modern hotel with old town near it made impression to her that she was out of soviet union. :D

    P5050015.JPG

But hotel had dirty secret. The elevator went to 22-nd floor and officially there was 22 floors. But everyone who could count knew that there was 23 floors in building.
    P5050023.JPG

Access to 23rd floor was only by stairs, closed with iron gates and only KGB had access to it.
    P5050026.JPG

Here is some of radio equipment they left behind when escaping hotel after Estonia gained independence and KGB lost its power. KGB used this high position for communication and spying of radio waves, they could reach to Finland from there.
    P5050087.JPG

They also listened hotel visitors, the rooms, restaurants and even sauna were bugged and there were designated hotel rooms where people of interest were accommodated, next room was reserved for KGB agent. Here is old soviet tape recorder, probably used to tape interesting conversations.
    P5050089.JPG

Some spying equipment, on top right are microphone cuff-links.
    P5050090.JPG

Bed for KGB agent to rest between shifts, they were monitoring 24/7.
    P5050092.JPG

On left is "wallet" with paint cans, these were used to find untrustworthy employees, if some worker found it and opened instead of reporting about it, then they were either fired or recruited as KGB collaborators. On right bugged "bread plate", KGB marked table of interest and waitress carried this plate to designated table.
    P5050103.JPG

    Soviet spy camera.
    P5050107.JPG

General view to this radio room
    P5050113.JPG

Balcony on 23rd floor. On right you can see these Hotell Viru letters. I guess this balcony was used by KGB also for monitoring and photographying of city center, these letters providing good cover.
    P5050083.JPG

If you are interested then I found this article estonianworld.com/life/tapping-and-tracking-soviet-tallinns-tourists/ giving more detailed overview of hotel and KGB.
