We've had complaints that the thumbnails for images were too small and the quality not good enough. For now, we've changed the size and the quality should be better. Please let us know if this is an improvement for you.

This does not affect existing images, only new ones.

    cheers

    Alan

Many thanks to Alan, Arvo and Martin for this :-)

Here's a test of the new thumbnails !
The previews now look fantastic compared to the old ones :-)
Bigger with more resolution and less artefacts :-)
Worthy of a website that prides showing and discussing qood quality photos !

Technical remark: images in posts are limited to 500px vertically (logical pixels - physically browser may display more, depends on OS scaling and browser zoom settings); this causes different (visual) width for posted images.
If you think this limit (max vertical size) should be increased, just tell - but I personally would not to increase that, posts/threads would take too much vertical space then.

Thanks for the explanation Arvo and thanks for the effort creating the new display size.

It seems quite good as it is. Compared to previously we can now see a lot more detail and get a better feel of the image. 👍

    A test:

    I uploaded this photo yesterday.

    L1002350_b.jpg

Noticing that the image was still open in Photoshop, I have saved a second copy and uploaded it here.

    L1002350_b2.jpg

Please correct me if my assumption is incorrect, that the first thumbnail should have the quality of the previous method, and the second of the new method.

    I cannot see any difference.

    David

You most likely uploaded your yesterday image after preview size was changed (announcement was done after the fact) - both images are resized to 1200px wide.
Search for some older image, reupload and compare them.

    OK. Let's try this one.

    Uploaded on 9 May:

    DSC01199_b.jpg

New copy, made and uploaded just now:

    DSC01199_b2.jpg

As hoped, the enlarged versions look identical. Thumbnail is much more informative. Thanks!

That really shows the difference well!
... as an aside the new previews in DPRevived are now 1200 pixels, which is slightly bigger than the DPReview previews (1120 pixels)
so, for the very best quality, come to DPRevived ;-)
