Any advice on a new tripod for a landscape and astro photographer that wants a solid tripod but has to hike? I am looking to ditch the manfrotto plate system and move to arca swiss (finally). I have been looking at the gitzo mountaineer 3 series but not much else and it has been so long since I bought. I am also looking for a fairly heavy duty ball head to go with it and the system to go pretty high (ideally) as I am 6'3".

I have a couple of FLMs I'm very pleased with, but they've recently moved manufacture from Germany to China, so there's a chance might not be the same now.

    primeshooter,

I have a 75" Geekoto Traveler that I'm pretty happy with.
It will handle a 22lb. load and comes with a carrying bag.

There's no way to recommend anything without knowing what you're going to put on it.

    Hi Primeshooter,

I have a K&N that I am quite happy with. They have many models: I got mine for its versatility. I read that the expensive Peak Design carbon fibre tripods are reckoned to be good also. But they are expensive and not particularly lightweight...

Of course, the taller the tripod, the more it will wobble! It is perhaps worth bending down to avoid this phenomenon.

Good luck with your search: please let us know what you get.

I've become a fan of Benro products over the last 5-7 years. Their Mach3 carbon fiber tripods are excellent. The legs (w/o the head) weigh in at 3.13 lbs.

Is there a size and weight limit you'd like to stay within for hiking comfort? Benro also makes lightweight travel tripods.

Count me as a Benro Mach3 user and fan too. I don’t use a tripod often so I appreciate the Benro price to performance ratio. Mine is paired with their B2 head.

May not be any good to you, but I'll put it up incase someone else is looking for a really good tripod. They review very well. Toronto based company. I know the fellow who owns the business.

I have this one. Jobu Algonquin CF.

I think they make another one a bit smaller. I've seen a picture where the owner of the company stood on the tripod, so it's durable.

I originally used a Really Right Stuff BH55 ball head but wasn't a fan. I bought a package of gear and an Induro tripod and ball head ( BHL3) came with it, so I kept the head for the tripod. I prefer it to the RRS BH55. I also have a Jobu Black Widow gimbal.
