Thanks a lot - I'm glad you think so! As stated before: I would love to take a look at your shots as well. Even if you don't like the forum or site as a whole, perhaps consider giving the weekly C&C thread a try. I know this place is not dpreview in terms of membership or reach, but you can get different interesting opinions here as well (and I think you might have your own unique views on a couple of images from others). If you still feel like it's a waste of time or effort, you can always leave for other places including the original starting point site.

I don't think all of your criticism is invalid - there's certainly some truth to a number of points you bring up, but I don't feel like it will have any positive effect in the way you've been presenting it to be honest. Judging by the (short) history of this site, a couple of people who would be banned immediately on almost any other forum I know, got a real chance to participate here, so unless your mind is set on being contrary/offensive, I'd still recommend giving that route a try.

Thanks for your patience, Alan! I'm sure many here appreciate it.

The above sounds good - I'm looking forward to it.

I'm only 37, so perhaps there's still a chance to be a really open-minded and kind old man in the future (like my grandpa still is at over 90 years old), but if I don't manage to do that, I'll at least aspire to be 'grumpy with style'! 😂

There is no accounting for being 'run over' by a bus the next day...lol

Actually it is - life expectancy calculator does (or at least is supposed to) account all deaths, independent of cause. It is simple statistics (unless it includes some vague extrapolation of average life length increase over coming years - I have no idea how linked calculator internally works).

Short formula - find average age of all people [of same sex and even better - in similar social group], older than you. Or use median, this way you get age, which you will reach with 50% probability (this is not same as average).

But all this goes wildly off-topic, I hope I get no responses to this side theme :)

That's what happens with forum posts. Sometimes they get more interesting too.

As for me, I've done my 3 score years and 10 - and I'm still here (so far)

    😁

I haven't 'been sidelined'. I'm actively working on the things that Alan described. I'm not posting much, among other things, because I end up spending too much time making posts like this.
I appreciate your impatience, but we do have a choice, which is to keep on with reactive tinkering to this or that wish from this or that user or to make a positive decision as to where we want to go and do that. The real point is that we need to transition from a replacement for DPReview forums, which is not now needed, to something which provides photographers with facilities they have not had before. As to what those will be, you'll need to see it when it comes. Until then I don't want to talk about it too much, because it always seems to end in negative discussions.
With respect to your comments on threaded view, we certainly do have a clue on it, but the underlying software of the site is not really compatible with it. As Alan said, we have a fix that does what can be done with this software (according to the original creator, a bit more than can be done). As for 'proper', I think it will do everything that DPReview's threaded view does. The new software base will be designed to support threaded view from the start, and will also be designed to allow us to add new, non-forum facilities.

Welcome back, Bob! I hope you are fully recovered.

I think it is a good idea for you to keep your head down and get on with the changes that Alan described. The quicker these can be successfully implemented, the better. We all want to get on with expanding the active membership!

By all means report regularly, because I and others find that ecouraging; but dont get embroiled in discussions here...

    All the best!

I find myself using this forum less because DPR feels more populated, however I haven't dropped out yet.
    A couple of UX notes:

When I return to forum, I still have no notifications from the threads I participated in. The simple red little notification flag (like on DPR and many other forums) would greatly encourage me to go there and maybe type a comment or two. I know I can go here dprevived.com/threads/subscribed/ but it's not a very straightforward action; a user needs to be pushed a little bit to create more content.

When I go here to check on the latest updates - dprevived.com/c/all-forums/94/ - I see 9-month old messages on the top, best case a few days old. If I were a new user or a casual visitor, I would have thought the forum is largely inactive. Only when I scroll down I can see newer messages.

Generally, the forum interface should encourage existing users to actively participate in discussions, and new users - to explore the content for longer and sign up.

QC, thanks for the message. Some (maybe not all) answers.

Notifications is one of the things we hope to bring in for the short term updates. So, maybe that will help one of your points.

Latest updates of all threads? There are two pinned threads - this one and announcing portfolios. Neither is 9 months old.So, I am unclear as to where you see that. So, you shouldn't need to scroll down to see new messages. They start three messages down.

Can you suggest anything which would actively encourage people to participate (apart from notifications, which won't help new users)?

    Interesting. Here's what I see: image.png
Fresh topics are at the bottom and wouldn't be seen on a screen not as big as mine.
In terms of the user's engagement, it's hard to tell, but when I come to a new form, before registration, I check how many fresh topics it has. If the latest comments had been there days or weeks ago, that would be a sign the forum is barely alive. Btw that's not the case with DPRevived - it's pretty much alive - but the link above may leave a false impression of a dead forum, if a newcomer doesn't look close enough.

Some forums have an additional tab with "hot topics" which DPRevivied kinda does by showing latest topic headings.

Hmm, you are accessing forum in a weird way :)

If you just click on "Threads" item in the top menu (marked green on attached image), you will be taken to address dprevived.com/threads/ and this does not show locally pinned threads at all.
If you navigate to All categories - All forums (marked red) then yes, you will see strange results.

I don't need to navigate all the way through Threads, the All Forums link is accessible right from the front page:

    image.png

So the Threads item doesn't show the pinned threads, but All Forums does...

I have never used the 'all forums' link - I always just click on 'Threads'.

I'll plough through the forums removing old pinned links. It may take a day or two.

OK - it's all done. The posts I have unpinned still show because I did something (unpinned them) but they wull gradually move down as other posts are made.

I hope that is OK for everyone.

    CURIOUS SEARCH FUNCTION (caps lock!)

I tried to find post ad Taylor ,Taylor& Hobson and the Kapella design bureau in case someone had knowledge of the "Opic" genesis , but the search for TTH only tunrned up three names, stating that they had no posts.

So, the question is whether the search engine (very fast !) has some need of revision.
