Vermeer’s Pictures within Pictures

    I came across this fascinating page quite serendipitously.

    Perhaps it will stimulate some here in their choice of subject material.

    Thanks for posting an interesting article.

    I think the only time that I have consciously used pictures within pictures is in doing some experiments with perspective: inserting a reduced version of the whole image inside itself, just to see the effect on the perspective.

    This is, of course, very different from what Vermeer was doing. However, Vermeer was very much a student of perspective also and I would imagine that he probably thought about how the perspective in his whole picture related to the perspective of any smaller "pictures within the picture".

    Vermeer also used a camera obscura.

    You should have placed the track walking gentleman on the same track as the oncoming train for more dramatic perspective...lol
